Thread: Betrayal at House on the Hill:: Rules:: How many times can a room be used?

Hey guys,

I guess everyone assumes we know this.

When a player walks into a room that has an item. Can another player walk in a search for an item as well?

Can a player walk into an event room multiple times (like the knowledge strength boost that are used once by each player?)

Does the player get the result for a room they draw even if they arent next to the room and don't enter it?

Sorry if these seem basic but there is almost nowhere in the book that covers this...

This is patently untrue. It's every bit as playable as regular Pandemic.

The worst thing about the discussion around Pandemic Legacy is all of the moaning coming from people who clearly haven't played even a single game of it.

First of all, you can't draw a new room tile unless you are exploring it. So the only way a new room appears is to move through a door where there is no room tile yet.

A few rooms (usually hallways) have no symbol to draw a card. If this is the case, then the player can keep moving.

If a room has a symbol to draw a card (either event, item, or omen), then that player can no longer move this turn, and will draw the card.

Players will never draw a card for a room that is already in play. The only way to draw a new card is to be the one to place the room, and the only way to place the room is to explore an unexplored area. (Exception: a room like the vault can be explored on a later turn to get the items it holds, but once those items are taken, then it is empty).

Thoughts to just tweak it? 6th epi might be too much. Draw more on initial setp up? Ensure X cities have Coda? Deal less player cards on setup?

Some people have suggested using a 6th epidemic card as the next level of reduced funding once you get to 0 event cards, which sounds like a good idea to me. If you lose with 6 epidemics, you "gain funding" by removing it for the next game. If you win with 6, well, congrats! Maybe it's time for 7 epidemics!

READ the text in red at the bottom of that objective card, it clearly states that it stays in the game throughout. Meaning it will stay in for 12 months, unless of course something happens later that destroys it, which I don't know, I haven't gotten that far. Who knows.

I thought about it, and while I appreciate your comment, I'm going to leave the petition as is. The legacy elements (i.e. Advent Calendar revelation of components) are only one aspect of game play, like branching progressions (which we have a bit of in Season One with [o]Box #8, and perhaps other elements[/o] or randomization. As we've been hashing here and elsewhere, some of us (including me) do not believe Legacy-style revelations require destruction of the components. (In my case, it's even a distraction from the game because it forces the game reality into literal reality in a petty way, which is not a plus for me. It feels tacked on and gratuitious.) As for what stage Season Two is in, the changes required to make a game replayable impact printing and component production, and would require tiny word changes in the rules -- all things that could be done if Z-man decided to do so.

Agreed. I think that's one of the reasons the artificial imposition of component destruction interrupts the game so much for me. It feels like they decided to go with a single-use version without really thinking about other possibilities, i.e. assuming that since Risk Legacy was single use so P:L must be, too.

Don't forget to open box 8! Presumably whatever is in there will help tip things back in your favor. :)

Who says you have to destroy the card? Why not just put it under the insert and dont use it again? Its not like Matt is going to kick down your door because you didnt tear up the medic card.
Matt uses the Dispatcher to have Rob come kick down your door, actually.

Well, sure, but Pandemic isn't all that great to begin with...

Hi All,

Only played through January so far (2 games) and I'm loving the tension. Quick question: (our group is playing 4-player games)

Once you've chosen the 4 characters you start with, should you bring in the 5th character if someone is turned into a Civilian (a lost character)? Or is that 5th character forever not used over the course of the "year"? I didn't see anything clearly stated in the rules about this.

Thanks!

Man, I do NOT remember that. Three! I wish I could go back and look at that card, but I don't have it.

So, it was a new card revealed at game end that just said you could add any of the medical or military equipment stickers from the other cards as a game end bonus? I'm blown away that I could forget that.

Actually, it sounds like you have the card there? Can you tell me the dossier number from the back? Thanks if you have it!

Yeap. You can add 3 equipment stickers as one of the 2 game end upgrades.
The rule change is under Dossier Door W.

It's difficult to swallow the double-standard here. When people suggest playing the game as-designed is the optimal way to play the game, you take great offense because you believe people should be able to play the game however they want (which, aside from the indignation, is a premise I agree with).

But when it comes to the way *you* want to play the game, all other methods are so artificial and sub-optimal that the designers weren't even thinking when they created the game.

You choose from the available characters at the start of each game. It is quite permissible to use a set of characters in 1 game and then drop characters in favour of another in the next one, perhaps bring a previously dropped character later.

If a character is lost, they become a civilian for the rest of that game, but can be replaced with a new character in the next game. Once a character is lost, that character is gone for good.

Just checking, since we borked that up on our first game with the Quarantine Specialist in February.

Did you play that the Quarantine Specialist's ability to place Quarantine markers in other cities is only once per turn?

Oh wow.. we've been playing with her up to September and did not notice that at all. I just checked the character card and indeed it says "once per turn"
The guy who played the Quarantine Specialist didn't say anything so we just guessed it was an unlimited power.. lol
Oh well- I guess that's another reason why the last few games have been very easy on us. We've been forgetting to infect COdA when drawing from the player deck as well. :P

We messed that up in our game also. I will have to point out to the game group that we failed the April month by not curing the 3 other diseases.

Depending on the diameter of the saber, you can also get a pin vice and drill out a hole (you may need very tiny drill bits, like the numbered or lettered series) in both halves. Then, apply a thin metal pin to both halves (secured with superglue).
