First, please change your post title to avoid spoilers

You will only gain one of the four evolution determined by the evolve cards, so to answer your question, yes they are void after you scratch one of the two options of each card.

So, the rulebook doesn't explicitly state this as far as I've seen but when attacking you pick either your hero or sidekick correct? They don't both get to attack?

Correct. And the card you play might be restricted to either the hero or sidekick. You might however have a card that lets you attack with both.

Correct, they don't both attack with a single action. You could use your two actions to attack with both in the same turn, once with the hero and once with a sidekick. Also, each needs to use an appropriately named attack card, either specifying the fighter who attacks, or "ANY."

I play with house rule that as long as your car didn't go off the track, you get 1, maybe 2 rounds to try to roll a 6 to repair it and keep going. But any cars that go off track or into rocks/heli are forever gone.

you added THREE tiles? I've never added more than 1 in 20+ games. Your group is probably playing like it's JUST a racing game. Play it like it's destruction derby or mario kart. You WANT to collide into people and be aggressive. And average play time is 45-75 min with new players. 30-45 min with experienced. Our last game had 3 cars ELIMINATED BEFORE the end of round 1...

No I have not noticed this. Maybe it was part of a recent update or so subtle we didnt notice. Maybe by having the tower make the sounds it would draw our attention to the right place.

Yeah, J&H still has a solid fan base!

Out of curiosity, in your play sessions, what do you do with the characters that you defined unbalanced or unfun? Don't you play them? Do you use house rules to nerf or buff fighters?

I once tried using a variant when a friend brought his BoL1 to the table. It was the Bryden variant (you can boost attack after defender plays his card) for KA. That small change made a huge difference for the best. And it was only a change to his Character Card, no need to modify any of the 30 cards from his deck.

We played our first two games this weekend. What we did for our kids (7 and 5) was Mario Kart rules: their last vehicle reappears where it blew up, brand new. It still triggered end game, but let them play the last few rounds without missing out. Didn't affect the victor: Game #1 the oldest respawned and my wife won, Game #2 the youngest respawned and the the oldest won.

To be fair, the setup steps don't make sense in the order they are given. The replacements should happen before the skull placement to avoid the extra faff, but oh well.

Agreed. This should be a relatively easy thing for them to fix, too.

Thread: Return to Dark Tower:: General:: How the heck do you remove wasteland tokens?

In the Covenant expansion, wasteland tokens can only be removed by an “effect that expressly removes them."

Well, I’ve only seen one such effect: a protection token that has to be placed beforehand by the Ritual of Warding spell… which is only available to one character (Revenant Astromancer)

This seems like such a baffling design decision… the wasteland tokens SUCK and are not a fun game mechanic. In our first Covenant game, we made the mistake of not prioritizing the monuments at first and were shocked at how many wasteland tokens popped up… I was expecting one per month but NO! *Each* kingdom got multiple wasteland tokens each month. We weren’t able to build our first monument until month 4 (in hindsight, we definitely should have prioritized them) and the map was riddled with wasteland tokens, which made moving around an impossible headache.

There’s not a single companion that removes wasteland tokens.
There’s not a single treasure that removes wasteland tokens.
There’s not a single quest item that removes wasteland tokens.

Are there any random events that remove them??? Any quest rewards that remove them???
We didn’t see any.

I literally doubt I can convince my friends to play Covenant again because it was such a long, miserable slog of a game thanks to the wasteland tokens. Obviously if we played again, we would focus on building monuments ASAP, but I still think it’s a HUGE fail that there are not other ways to “heal” your lands of wasteland tokens.

Thanks for the info Justin!
Do you know if the expansions from the first kickstarter will be available during the new kickstarter? It would be nice if people who got just the base game at retail could get some of the expansions. The new expansion looks fun!

I think you’ve already figured out that building monuments fast is the only prevention, which to me is a good mechanic.

However, prioritizing monuments anyway is a good plan since monuments provide three benefits:
1. Monuments prevent spread of wasteland
2. Monuments gives strong recruit actions
3. Monuments provide extremely helpful random events

Finally, give covenant another chance. The people I’ve played with have surprisingly preferred covenant to the other expansion. Covenant provides a much tougher experience and sometimes more defined goals to work towards.

I was browsing the new preorders on GN and stumbled upon a new Unmatched title, Slings & Arrows. I wonder if it’s one of the Witcher trios, the Shakespeare set, or something else… MSRP is $39.95 so my money is on a three-character set. No release date is given though. It just says “More info coming soon!” Regardless of what it ends up being, new Unmatched is exciting news!

We will have to agree to disagree on that point. There should be a couple different ways to remove them, even if it’s costly to achieve the effect. There are SO many ways to remove foes, for example.

And sure, hindsight is 20-20 and we should have focused more on the monuments but a couple of the ones we had to build were annoying to do so:
One required you to defeat monsters in wasteland territories (without the right potion, this was determined by luck when they were initially placed)
One required you to lose 8 warriors due to a battle card (again, determined entirely by luck)

I definitely want to play it again, but I would be surprised if my friends will. The game just didn’t feel fun. I like Alliances cause you get a bunch of cool companions and the guild mechanic made you feel more invested in the kingdoms. Covenant was definitely more challenging, but not in a good way. Just my first impression, though.

I've played some scenario setups several times, with different people, and I've found them to be great fun every time. If you play with the same people you might want to switch it up with some expansions, especially the upcoming ones that introduce the wandering monsters combined with some of the new Elder Ones.

Well that's something! Thanks for the post.
I read on RG's Discord that Shakespeare's set is supposed to be a 4 characters box, and I really hope they keep releasing 4 character boxes for public domain, since it's always been a nice selling point: it's great value, and it's much easier to get at least a couple characters that interest you in a box of 4.
Not saying I'm not interested in Shakespeare, we know nothing about him yet, but with my ever growing collection of legends to play with... something else (less niche?) in the box to justify the purchase would be great :D

Shakespeare does automatically justify this haha. But curious what's the rest still!
So glad to see PD coming back. First the fun Japan set and now a new big box as well! After all the Marvel it was about time to get back to the good stuff hehe
