Personally, I think this is gaming the system. Encoded messages is to enhance the ability to exchange information. Play how you want ... but I don't think it is right based on intent, as you said.

A few of us tried to puzzle out how this works, but something's not clicking with the instructions. Can you provide an example?

I agree with you that, strictly speaking, one could interpret the card text to allow a Symptom card to be swapped with another card during Encoded Messages event.

But I'm curious about how you interpret one of the icons on the Rule H sticker. Underneath where it says to take 1 Symptom card into your hand when you enter a city containing 1+ disease choices, it also has an icon showing 6 fanned-out cards with "-1" underneath. I take that to mean that a Symptom card essentially makes your hand able to hold one less usable card. So it's part of your "hand" in that it counts toward the 7-card limit but it can't be used for anything; it just clogs you up, slows you down.

Is that the exact wording?

If it says city card instead, then symptoms don't count. Or events.

Otherwise it's fair game.

Not sure if the month is correct but was conservative since I'm pretty sure Disease cubes/outbreak mechanics are in full swing by now.

I just wanted to make sure I have a proper grasp on how to handle these, and the differences between Exposed and Contamination:

* The ONLY way a city becomes "Exposed" is through successful MEDUSA Trials. Just placing a cube in a city (due to an outbreak for example) does not add any stickers to the board.

* Contamination stickers ONLY go on the city that outbreaks. I think of them like the disease analogue of the Surveillance stickers.

* The only downside/risk of having cubes spread out of the Exposed cities via Outbreaks is faster accumulation of Symptom Cards.

Is all of this correct?

Yes, that's the exact wording from my English printing purchased on release.

It took us a while to get it straight in our heads too. We eventually landed on what you said (except I think you meant unsuccessful in the first bullet).

That's a good idea to compare Contamination stickers to Surveillance stickers, both added at end of game, the former due to Outbreak side of "barrel", the latter due to Incident side of "barrel".

Regarding the downside/risk bullet, doesn't running out of green cubes also end the game? So that would be another downside/risk of cubes spreading beyond Exposed cities.

To add to what @albcann said, if I remember correctly [o]the pursuit tokens -- 12 blue chips -- and checkpoints tokens -- 12 beige chips -- were in the same packet[/o].

True, but we've been successful enough at preventing the trials (so far) that running out has never been a realistic threat.

What is the wording on symptom cards? Does it just prevent discarding?

Take down Jackalope. Then play the long game. Ranged is best. Don't be afraid to put your sidekick between you and him

Thanks for the tips guys ! Good idea to take Jackalope down asap. Still not sure how you can defeat him with Robin Hood but that's a fine challenge.

Nope ... the OP has it right with successful. If you don't stop the trial, then the trial is successful, leading to the exposed city. It is "you" as the player who is unsuccessful in stopping the trial.

But I get what you meant.

I also agree, OP, with how you are playing it. If you are wrong, then I am too!

And for Rosie the Riveter, Restoration Games has already shared that she’ll be building/piloting a mech suit.

Could I get some advice from this thread on the best "characters" to play this game with solo? I stumbled across a discussion on how much some people hate this game on Reddit. I did as much research as I could, got the "Speedfall" variant from the nice fellow here working on that (and read as much as I could without spoiling things) and found a copy going for $30 so I figured, what the heck, lets try this crazy damn idea.

So please no spoilers, but I thought you'd have some tips on 1) how many hands to play, and 2) what their priorities might best be

Which do you prefer?

Is one more polished? Is one more fun in your opinion?

If you have the base game would you feel the need to get Betrayal Legacy?
