Thread: Betrayal at House on the Hill:: Rules:: Haunt 47 - Attack and health

Hi.
I’ve resently played haunt 47 with some friends and since this was our second game and we’re new to this game I feel we overlooked some info or just got some of it wrong.
The Worm Ouroboros has two heads. In order to attack them we need to bring the skull to them and win the sanity roll of 5+. It’s stated the body of the Worm does not attack, but do slow down heroes. My questions are as follow:

- Can the heads go different ways? I would assume it’s one body but with two heads, not a sort of «jumprope» with two ends. This way the heads have to be in the same room, but then why would the heads get two turns? I’m therefore leaning on the «jumprope» theory. This again makes the probability to win better for the player who is the Worm as they have to put down 16 pieces to win, which is hard if you’re «one worm» instead of two and can only move with one dice.

- If the heads are in the same room regardless of the last questions answer, if a hero attempt a sanity roll and weaken the Worm, does this affect both heads or do you choose head like you do in regular combat?

- When the heads are weakened, are they killed when they reach their health limit or must both heads be killed while one is stunned? I would guess if you kill one it is dead while the other head keep moving and still has a chance to win.

Thanks for all answers.

Possible spoilers from February up until June:

[o]We wanted to add a house rule that if a character dies, its colleague/family member/... receives an injury out of pure misery, while the rival receives an upgrade. Trying to add a bit more flavor and personal attachment to the relations. Is this a bad idea? A simple yes or no is enough, I'm wary of getting any kind of spoilers :-) Thanks!

[o]I'm not sure that deaths are common, so I don't think this variant would impact the game very much.[/o]

Yes, each head moves independently and are connected by body tokens.

The Secrets of Survival says, "Anyone holding the Skull can attempt a Sanity roll of 5+ once during his or her turn to cast a weakening spell on one of the heads." (emphasis added)

Your guess is correct. Each head can be independently killed. The Haunt instructs the Traitor to keep track of damage using the Turn/Damage Track, but I'd recommend using tokens instead.

I'd say that, while it wouldn't actually break the game, this is a bad idea.

Which is a pity, as I like it thematically. (-8

This has some problems:
[o]1) Upgrades are pretty strong. Getting a free one will make the game considerably easier, where gaining a scar is usually not as bad.
2) Characters rarely die, so this house rule is pretty pointless.
3) Rivals is already the strongest relationship, and you're making it even better while hosing the bad relationships.[/o]

Thread: Betrayal at House on the Hill: Widow's Walk:: Rules:: #92 "Ghost at the Finish Line" unnessarily complex? [Spoiler]

We played Haunt #92 today and found the rules to be unnecessarily complex—especially since most will only play this haunt once.

[o]The rules instruct all item and omen cards to be collected from each hero and shuffled into their respective piles. Players are then tasked with writing down cluess for the Runner's requirements. And new cards are dealt to each hero. This is done in an attempt to prevent players from writing down clues that favor their own hero.[/o]

Thematically, we also found it to be confusing.

[o]Why would the ghost's appearance make everyone's items disappear and change into new items?[/o]

Here was our solution to help simplify things and solve the problem:

[o]Ignore all but the first and third rules in Right Now. This means every hero keeps their items.

For the Runner's requirements, use the clues that they have provided as examples:
1. Is a weapon
2. Starts with (pick a letter)
3. Ends with (pick a letter)
4. Cannot be dropped
5. Has just one vowel
6. Rhymes with an animal (ex: "Girl" and "Squirrel") [/o]
Once we did this, it helped make the haunt easier to understand. This was helpful when playing with people who are less familiar with Betrayal.

Spoiler for panel 60 & Rule Sticker H:

We learned of the location of a lost haven, and added the sticker to the board. We then added a supply line to Lima, adding Lima to the grid. The sticker from panel 60 looks like the lost haven is connected to Lima, and thus connected to the grid. We then lost the game before we could access the lost haven.

1) Is this lost haven connected to the grid, for the purposes of our next starting game? Could we put supply cubes there, for example?

2) Can we use the Shuttle Flight action to access the haven from another haven?

3) If someone uses a production card to produce at all supply centers and havens, will cubes produce at the lost haven?
[/o]

Yes to all of these.

(We revealed this in March; I think that's the earliest it could be revealed, but I'm not certain.)

Absent a specific citation, this is wrong.

[o]
The sticker specifically says that the Lost Haven is discovered when someone *enters* it, not when it is connected to the grid. (The flavor text on the card describing the Haven clearly describes someone entering the abandoned Haven and exploring it.)

What you say is correct, but doesn't invalidate Burning's quote which is also correct.
[O] The Lost Haven is on the grid as soon as it is connected - i.e. as soon as the sticker is put on the board. It is only "accessed when someone moves there. But if Europe has been reconned then Shuttle Flight is a valid means of getting there to "access" it.[/o]

[o]This house rule sounds like fun, though you should probably play your first game of this as the designers intended. Maybe rather than get an upgrade, which is a bit too strong, you could just say the rival "gets over" one of their scars and you can ignore its effects.

Also, Rival is a strong relationship, but if the person you have a relationship with dies then that relationship is useless, so it doesn't matter how strong the relationship used to be.[/o]

Pretty sure there are no spoilers here:

The Caravan Driver has Buy +2 and the ability to buy from the bank. If he is at a colony with "Buy +2 at this location", how many goods can be purchased from the bank?

My group can't achieve a unanimous ruling on this.

[o]It matters. A relationship that has a positive effect when it ends is more powerful than that same relationship that doesn't.[/o]

You can buy up to six total goods, at least two of which must be from the island with the colony. So up to four from the bank.

This is the only one we've played from Widow's Walk to date. I agree it is overly complex, and I found the story aspect weak.

[o]We found found this haunt frustrating. (1) The idea of having to reveal ALL rooms made the game unnecessarily long. (2) I ended up drawing a box which instructs you to draw another card (sorry, can't remember the name of the card, it's been a while since we played) to store in the box when you first acquire the box. Am I supposed to follow the instructions on the box? Technically, I didn't acquire it through a regular draw because it magically appeared. There were other cards we acquired through this magic transformation that caused additional questions simply because of how they were acquired. Maybe there were obvious answers we just couldn't think of because it was late, and we were tired and cranky. :p[/o]

To sum up, we did not like this haunt, and if we get it again, we'll end up choosing a different one. I hope the rest of the Window's Walk haunts are better.
