So my family and I played June last night. A landslide win, even with out SIXTH turn 1 Epidemic. 6 of 9 games now have seen us draw an Epidemic turn 1. However, given our [o]bounty of supply cubes[/o] and our great initial infection (8 cities hit), we were never in any sort of panic, like we were in games past. Only one plague cube showed up, and that only because we made the decision to end the game in 2 turns, rather than prevent that single hit.

Partially because of getting the good side of the variance - but equally due to having the great feedback from this post in the forefront of my mind as we setup and played - we were able to have more fun with this game than we have had with any game before it.

1. We set as our own Objective to [o]thin the deck, through Inoculation, for at least 9 cards. We planned which cards we would target, and why. We got 7 thinned out.[/o]

2. Instead of letting our son take his favorite character, we waited until the player cards came out to decide who would play which character. Turned out my son scored 3 blue cards in his opening hand, so he was able to take his preferred character.

3. Set out to burn 1-2 Produce Supply cards. Unfortunately we only got multiple use cards, with multiple uses left on them, and couldn't actually burn the cards and thin the deck. But we definitely didn't fret over their use and used them liberally.

All that said, we were able to get back to "puzzling" our way to a convincing victory primarily because of great luck:

1. The initial infection was as good as could be. 8 different cities meant we had 0 cities empty after that initial infection.

2. My son drawing 3 blue cards allowed him to use his ability on his first turn.

3. 3 of the 4 Rationed Events we put into the deck were drawn from the first 3rd of the player deck and were an important part of puzzling out the victory.

4. My wife chose to play the recon character (can recon with 1 less card) because she started with 2 unique yellow. After her 3rd turn, she had enough yellow to recon. Huge good fortune.

I am getting that we need to be proactive in our battle against variance. I feel we can battle the variance a little at this point in the campaign. And I am more hopeful than I have been that the remainder of this campaign can, and will, be an enjoyable puzzle. However, variance is still a fickle beast in this game, and I think the design could have been a little tighter to prevent variance being such a factor in both the wins and losses. Even as late as a June game and variance is still very significant. Too much so, I continue to submit.

Yeah, it's definitely supposed to be a bonus. In a lot of games and with some abilities it's pretty easy to get cubes from the stockpile onto the board, and the size of the stockpile is a real limitation. But not all bonuses work at all times, so as written it would have no effect if there's no cubes in reserve.

I suppose it's possible to have no cubes left in the reserve though - did you discover some other ways of getting cubes from reserve to board/stockpile already? Anyway, even if you did, next month there's gonna be 3 more cubes in the reserve/3 less in the stockpile, and another 3 the month after that...

I don't remember, is that event a rationed or unrationed event? If it's a rationed event, well, that's a pretty good reason to put some other event in the deck instead, if you have no use for that one in a particular game.

"Hidden Stockpile" is a Rationed event.

[o]The one that is Unrationed is "Strategic Reserves" which puts 8 cubes from the reserve into the Stockpile. [/o]

My group is a group of Pandemic veterans. It's always been a go-to game for us, and we love the original. We loved Pandemic Season 1. The overall plot was engaging, and we found the gameplay to be challenging and fun. My group ended up doing very well in Season 1. It was one of the best game experiences we've had.

We're through August now in Season 2, and I'm having trouble finding any fun at all in the game. The plot is boring with not a twist or a AHA moment (and I hear there may be some coming, but if you're 2/3 of the way through the game and one hasn't happened yet then you're doing something wrong with story).

Plus the game is extremely punishing, and it punishes you for doing things you weren't really supposed to be doing and then punishes you for not doing things fast enough that you weren't aware you were supposed to be doing.

[o]Oh you weren't aware that you get screwed unless you Recon areas quickly and will lose important upgrades if you don't prioritize Recon?
Ha ha, suckers![/o]

Plus with upgrades and gameplay strategy/prioritization, what is very obvious strategy now in hindsight wasn't an obvious strategy at start but you can't go back and redo so...tough luck for you.

Plus the game is very much a Lose more --> Lose more game where if you get behind the curve for any reason, you pretty much get sunk in the future. We had a few games of horribly bad luck like back to back Epidemics instantly ending games, and I'm not sure we're really recoverable at this point.

We're not having any fun. I don't even want to play anymore since it doesn't seem worthwhile to even try. You don't have enough supplies, you keep getting less supplies every month while adding more cities, and then the tempo of the game gets insane with the number of Epidemics and other bits that hit you and the fact you have no margin of error because any plague cube coming out marches you to a quick loss. We can't even get out of the gate without being halfway to losing because of the number of plague cubes that are out instantly on the board.

Unless we're doing something horribly wrong (which is possible), this has been the biggest letdown I've ever had in a game.

Without knowing exactly what your board state is and what you're doing, I can't say for certain that you're doing something horribly wrong, but it sounds like something's definitely gone askew somewhere.

Regarding Your Spoiler Issue
[o]You do get a couple of prompts throughout the game that reconning is something that you need to do sooner rather than later - there are a few of the scratch off cards before each game that basically warn you "you need to do this soon" before you get any penalties. And after the first penalty, I would think your priorities would shift to making recons more important[/o]

Spoilers Regarding Your Supply Issues - Spoilers through...I think April Or May
[o]
You've accessed the Lost Haven in the Pacific, right? Because that would have bolstered your stockpile quite a bit.

There's another one like it - I am pretty sure the game "gives" it to you in August (or maybe September).
[/o]

Spoiler for a Game Mechanic/Exploration Thing - goes through the whole game, potentially
[o]
Have you found any of the labs? They're made mention of in the recon reports and some of the journal entries/archive information, and you get some co-ordinates off an archive report. You should search at places close by those co-ordinates.

It's not much different than any other event card, it's useful when the situation occurs otherwise not so much. If you don't have cubes in the reserve then yeah it's pretty useless, just like removing plague cubes is useless when there are none around, but if you see how the stockpile and reserve develop over the months you will find it has its worth eventually (if you still happen to have funding at that point) :D

Hi, this is a question that just came up following the end of our first game in October. We triggered the game end card that instructs you to open door 58.

I'm going to put my question behind the spoiler tag just in case anyone stumbles onto this thread by accident. Do not click to read the text below unless you have seen the card labeled "An Incomplete Plan" and have opened door 58.

[o]Door 58 has a sticker connecting Shanghai to Utopia. It covers text that says you do not yet know how to get in with text that instead says "If you are able to execute the plan, open Package 8."

The card titled "An Incomplete Plan," has four bullets. The top bullet says "Find a way in" and depicts five different red cards, as if for a recon action. I have several questions.

First, does the new sticker mean that if I have five different red cards in Shanghai then I can open package 8?

If so, then what are the rules for executing the plan? Do I treat it exactly like a recon? So it costs one action and I discard the cards? If it is just like a recon, does it need a supply center first?

Also, do I get to use character abilities that affect how the recon action works? We have a character that can recon for fewer cards and a different character that can recon without a supply center.[/o]

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

When you start November, your questions will be answered. If you want me to spoil, they will be marked.

[o]You will get a new Objective card and "The Plan". You will be instructed to destroy "An incomplete Plan." You must follow all of the instructions on the card in order to complete the plan, which will allow you to open Package 8 [/o]

Thanks! I did not read what you wrote there, but glad to hear I'm not missing something. We lost October, so I guess it'll be another game out before it's explained.

The actual situation we were in (we're in May, spoilers for things we've seen up to that point, including various things you need to Recon/Search for):

[o]Thanks to Hidden Stockpile and a certain other thing, we had no cubes in the Reserve, then did a Search that says "take X cubes from the reserve and put them in this city." That's already pretty crappy compared to other Search results, but making it a complete no-op aside from advancing the Search objective made it even more so.[/o]

In Haunt 80, it says you can't do any actions except mutate and drop items if you're captured. Does the sanity roll from the sanity mutation count as an action? Thanks!

You can do two searches - one on the land, and one at sea. It takes one action to do each search, and you can choose which one to do first.

Thread: Pandemic Legacy: Season 2:: Strategy:: Finding Season 2 difficult? Take notes for profit (and fun?)

by nerman8r

Hi folks,

I have read a number of posts where people are finding the game quite difficult because of bad luck or failure to get the right recons done or what-have-you. I wanted to offer a couple ways to take notes to make the game easier:

1) Note how many cards are in the player deck, and where the epidemic cards are, so the first epidemic might be in the top 8 cards, the next in the 8 cards below that, and so on. Keep track of how many cards are drawn to give yourself an idea of when it might turn up.

2) This is what we (well, I) do. Write a list of all the infection cards that are drawn, down the left-hand side of the page. So at the game start it might look like this (I might have colours wrong. I don't have the board in front of me.)

Blue
New York 1
2
Washington 1
London 1
Yellow
Sao Paulo 1
2
Black
Cairo 1
Tripoli 1
Istanbul 1

Leave enough room for the missing cards. Keep adding cards as they are discarded. When there's an epidemic, first add the new card from the bottom, then draw a line down the page to the right of your list. As each card comes up a second time, make a check mark to the right of the line for the corresponding card. For each subsequent epidemic, make another line.

In this way, you can predict with some accuracy what cards will show up, both if an epidemic is drawn, and if not.

If you have scrap paper, use that. Hope that helps!

Thread: Pandemic Legacy: Season 2:: General:: Question Regarding Infection Tracker Tool

by jtgoodwin1

Hi folks!

I created a tool in excel to help my friends and I track which city cards might be drawn from the infection deck at any particular time.

I am no IP attorney, but my understanding is that this tool is a derivative work of the intellectual property owned by the game developers, and as such they own the license to it.

I would like to upload the file so other players can improve upon the tool/use the tool in their own campaigns, however, if I am correct above the game developers own the copyright to the tool and I am not authorized to make it publicly available without their permission.

So my question is this: how do I go about getting the permission of the game developers to share the tool? Note that it includes instructions which state that I am in no way affiliated with the team involved with creating the Pandemic games.

[o]Thanks for the quick answer! I need a requeriment to do a specific search? I mean, if I wanted to do "the search by the sea", I need to do something first?[/o]

People upload files like that all the time and there isn't a problem. Are you concerned about legal action, or just wanting to do things "the right way?" I'd also suggest that Z-Man and the game's designers would be happy to see that you've made this tool.
