735, our recon was very slow. We actually had to lose one game to complete recon of Asia. It felt like we were always scrambling at the end of games just to complete objectives prior to losing.

All told another amazing experience.

FWIW, I just got this game a few days ago. A smash hit with the gamers I have played it with as well as my family. It's coming with me to Thanksgiving where we'll get some 6-player games in.

For us, gamers anyway, the strategy for winning is pretty straightforward and we figured most of it out before we finished our first game. "Ah - so that's why X!, and "okay, now I see..." Our second game had more informed bidding and strategy.

So I'm glad I found this thread. Not sure if I followed it correctly, but our house rule is that nobody is allowed to play an 8 until somebody (any car) crosses the first betting line. There is a lot less brainless card play in the beginning.

Great game btw. Renegade games should feel honored that this is going to a Thanksgiving dinner. About as High praise as I can offer up for a game that's both popular with deeper games as well as non-gamers.

The beautiful colors, graphic design, and streamlined rules all work in concert to deliver and excellent game.

We actually are looking for small Nascar cars in the respective colors to trick out the game. ;)

I think that is wrong - you have to have a successful explore endeavour at the tomb and then you can choose any of the "tomb map" items and read that paragraph. And then you have to pass whatever endeavour is required of the paragraph - although it may not be an endeavour.

In the situation you specifically described, it would completely stop. Faded cities only produce Faded figures when drawn. Therefore, when they are vaccinated and nothing is drawn, that includes the original disease. After all, it's not like you put red cubes on the vaccinated red spaces, no?

Actually, you do still put red cubes on red (non-Faded) vaccinated cities. Vaccinations only protect from C0Da, not the other diseases.

The CoDA is red, in this case.
Ah, whoops. Then yes, red cubes never come out again.

When you use the sail/charter boat action, you are not considered to pass through, enter, or leave any cities in the middle.

If you are in city A and take a sail/charter boat action to city B, you are considered only to have left city A and entered city B. To do this action you have to be able to trace a sea route from A to B, but that is only used to determine whether the action is allowed, nothing else.

Which I think brings us to easy to miss rules - there are many rules here which are ALMOST like basic Pandemic rules, but not quite. Remember to read the rules as written, not just by analogy to other Pandemic games.

One easy to miss one is the sail/charter boat action, which is almost like the direct/charter flight action in regular Pandemic... but here, it can only be done in ports, and between two cities that are connected by sealanes.

Scratched off everything (even all of the exposure). Oddly, Santiago was one of the few searches we never got to do. Pretty sure it was the only negative one.

We were so happy with that, as we played the game in Wellington. We googled the latitude and longitude when we got them, and were "hey! that's us!"

I have a question about the radio operator (I guess no spoilers necessary).

When can he use his ability? Can he distribute cubes whenever he wants, or does he have to be in the same city as another player to trigger the distribution action?

Radio operator can use their ability as a free action on their turn. They do not have to be in the same city as another player.

Don't forget to mark spoilers, as some people reach these post via search engines that bypass the thread subject.

1) (Box 5) [o]These were for discovering the secret of the statues, not the existence of them. (There are Booke entries that tell you when to claim the corresponding "secret of the statue" milestone, and those milestones tell you to add the event cards.)[/o]

2) My recollection is that every milestone had instructions to record the milestone on the historical record, but I could be misremembering. In any case, you *should* record every milestone completed, along with who completed them *and their value*, as the total value of milestones completed is a tiebreaker.

X) (Box 3) [o]When exploring a tomb, you may choose any entry (ie, Booke number) shown on the tomb map.[/o] (Box 5) [o]Some entries require a bit more effort to recognize as numbers, but they follow the same rule once you can read them.[/o]

3 and @Jim) (Box 3) [o]No, when you take an exploration at a tomb, you choose an entry and read it to determine what value to roll for your endeavor. You don't roll twice. Note that you are still "exploring" regardless of the value that entry tells you to roll. So, for example, you might be performing an exploration endeavor using your raid value ... but it isn't "a raid", so you don't count garrison or enmity against you.[/o]

4) Yes.

5) (Box 6) [o]I don't recall reading anything that said you ignore winter ... did I miss something?[/o]

6) (Box 5) [o]Yes, you always get a glory for questioning an advisor, as long as you are the first to do so. After the first, people can still question them to see the rank, though this wouldn't apply to public society members. You also get a glory for controlling (not activating) advisors that have a glory symbol on them (ie, when you hire them or at the start of the game if you kept one from last game). You lose that glory if you lose the advisor, as normal.[/o]

That's because that power isn't once per turn. It's possible to use it twice in a turn if you build two separate supply centers in a turn - each one using one fewer card and two supply cubes.

But the ability is pretty clear though - the labourer can build a supply center using one fewer card if they spend two supply cubes. You could do that twice in a turn if you wanted - you could build two supply centers, each using one fewer card and spending two supply cubes.

We started playing Farmer and Laborer, which is similar to what we started with in Season 1 with the Medic and Scientist.

I think a lot of the combinations would work well. We ran through the prologue twice to get a feel for the characters and gameplay before starting. If you're new to Pandemic, I'd recommend it just so that you can understand the characters better.

I like the look of the characters. And, there's enough variety in the stickers that you should be able to find a few that you like the look of.

One of my favorite pieces of art are the sketches on the back of the advent calendars of doom. I think it's cool each one has a different set of sketches. For people that frame their boards when they're done, I bet there's some cool ways to incorporate that art.

You need to make use of the
(Box 5++) [o]hidden symbols on the tomb map, along with the secret "decryption" info on the tablets. Assuming you know how to translate the symbols into numbers, then the symbols on the tomb are entry numbers, just like the normal, visible ones -- and when you explore a tomb, you can choose any entry on the tomb map! In some cases, the resulting entries tell you that you have discovered the secret of a statue.[/o]

Many interesting ideas here! My son and I are talking about taking a group through the game and some of these variants could be fun!

I do have one rules question; did you add relationships only with characters who had never played previously? From your post it sounds uncertain, but the rules only allow relationships to be added if at least one of the characters is new.

We have played the game as intended and according to the rules! The changes I proposed here where never tested, since I have no second copy of the game, it was just something I came up with when I looked back at our campaign and saw all the stuff that was left in the box. I would still use the relationships as intended, that is only introduce them if a brandnew character joins the team.

There's an obvious balancing act, here.

If each team only used a fraction of the components, they receive proportionalely less fun for the same amount of effort by the designers.

However, if every team plays the game the same, if there are no choices to use one thing and not another, if there are no dangers that can be averted, then it's a whole lot less interesting.

I'd say Season One sits very cleverly at the sweet spot between those two competing constraints.

Good analysis, although I feel like you could still let the players use more of the game components without decreasing the range of decisions. Actually I think my suggestions would lead to an increase in decisions, since one would be forced to use new characters and got to choose and use the subventions - a game element that entirely stayed in the box for our group.
