This part is incorrect. I get 3 colonies active from the start all the time.

[o]One of them is on Patmos.[/o]

And so long as you have
(Box 4 spoilers)
[o]the colony formerly known as Ker as one of your colonies, it's possible to actually start with FOUR active colonies! You could be getting up to 19 gold (assuming I recall ex-Ker's field value correctly) during the harvest phase, then spend 18 of it to activate an additional three colonies. Add an advisor with a glory value and you could have 5 glory before your first turn...[/o]

I did much the same, though on the second island, rather than the third.
(Box 1 spoilers)
[o]That island also happened to have a spice site, along with a spice dock (plus other goodies), which meant that my first turn was generally sail + upgrade (buy +2 explore upgrade for 10 gold + spice from colony), followed by what we referred to as "the slingshot" on the next turn.

If you really want to take the idea to the max, bump your fleet speed up to five and build your +3 sail colony on the fourth island. It's well-placed to maximize mobility (for more than one reason)![/o]

I agree with Xavier's interpretation ... but I also think I'd prefer the other interpretation. :)

That's a great idea; it would have clarified the mechanic without spoiling any of the related mechanics. Better yet, maybe add in a name like "Hidden Passageway", also in the same ink.

I think more people should consider playing with 2 (I could see how waiting for 3 more people to take their turns could make the game drag). With two players this is smooth as silk and plays fairly quickly.

I'd argue a two player game is a totally different experience. The more players you have, the likelier it is you'll be competing for resources and milestones. So tension goes really high the closer you get to ending the game.

Will you be able to get the milestone first? Can you sabotage the leader somehow so they won't win another game? Will you be able to fend off the attacks from the other players so you can buy that last treasure next turn?

In a two player game, it's probably more about finding the optimal use of resources so you can outpace your opponent. Going to war will, most likely, set you back further than the opponent, especially if they decide to get back at you "for free" when it will hurt you the most.

So if our next game goes how I expect it to, one of my opponents is going to build the +1 Explore Colony in just about the perfect spot for it, in range of all of our as-yet undiscovered islands and in range of most of the unexplored sites on the existing islands. It's going to be great for him. (*shakes fist internally*)

Anyway, I'm expecting I'll want to spend Reputation at some point to use the ability. My question is when you can decide to do that. Do I have to pay to use it before an Explore endeavor roll, or can I roll and then decide I need it after I see the results?

That would definitely have to be during the "build dice pool" step of the endeavor. No way can you add it on after tou see the results.

October spoiler, same as last comment:
[o]Mmm. Losing because you have some specific objective you'd rather accomplish than winning makes much more sense to me, and seems both a stronger play and more in the spirit of the game than simply trying to rig the funding system!

I do wonder if you thought sufficiently laterally about how to do what you needed, though. You get the month's mission briefing at the start of setup so can focus quite carefully on what you're trying to do. Maybe you want to have someone play the Operations Expert so they can build the military base without discarding the city's card? Maybe the Soldier, or a Flexible character, or a Rival, could recover the city's card after you've used it to build the base. Is a Drone Escort a better way to get into the city? And so on.[/o]

The only difference is that the Research (2 cards) doesn't stack.

My second question has to do with events and buildings that allow you to refresh the advisors. The way these things are written makes it sound like you only replace advisors that have been dismissed, so if there are no advisors they don't do anything. Is this right? It seems not very useful at least for us as the advisors usually get bought up very quickly.

You should be refilling the advisors every time you buy one. It's in the rulebook under "Hire an Advisor."

Oh, wow! We've really been playing this one wrong. I'm glad I caught this now. Getting advisors has been really difficult, especially as I've been last to go most of the time. I can't believe we all missed that rule.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

It's been a Hard Game Day's Two Nights

I'm behind - two game nights and one game days worth, and some miscellaneous gaming with my son. So this is gonna mebbe be a LONG post :) I've got some games I liked, some games I want to rant about, and some other news, too! But let's start with the highlight!

I'm

:nostar::nostar::nostar::nostar: PRINCESS DENISE :nostar::nostar::nostar::nostar:

again!!

Yes, that's right, I have been restored to my rightful place on my throne in our SeaFall campaign. I am grateful for the difficulty of the current goals, because while everyone else was chasing those, I concentrated on exploring and buying treasure and that worked out just peachy. (Princess Peachy :) )

I do not know how much longer it will last. Dave is again plotting open rebellion against the throne. Christy and Ben actually cancelled our last game this weekend, ostensibly because they were 'sick', but I'm pretty sure in my current state of Royal Paranoia that they just needed a little more time to bring some evil scheme to fruition. Perhaps they should've sprung for Priority Mail shipping on those rare poisons from the Madagascar coast...

So our next game of Seafall should be great fun :) I am pretty much just trying to figure out how to dig my feet in and refuse to be budged at this point. I have some ideas that should help :)

In other news - I'm going to go on the BGG@Sea 2018 trip to Alaska! I've loved the cruises I've been on before, and they weren't even gaming cruises, so the idea of a board game cruise sounded great from the start! And, I'm trying to find the bright side of divorce - I couldn't have done this when I was married unless I gave up one or more of my other gaming cons that year. Now all I have to do is come up with the money, as my time is now my own :) If I decide to get a roommate then it will be very affordable, and if I don't, I can still swing it as long as I don't have TOO many financial disasters in the next year :) And if I take my son as a roommate, it will be the trip of a lifetime for him! :)

But enough chat - what games have been on the table? Journey with me back in time, all the way back to January 13th, a Friday, when Dave had fittingly chosen spooky games for the Friday the 13th theme. We played a wonderful game of Mansions of Madness: Second Edition.

You see that old lady figure with the raised arms there? That was our Martial Arts Granny, played by Mike, who went through the house busting up furniture and doing flying drop kicks whenever monsters showed up. She was awesome, and way more badass than she had any right to be!

I really enjoyed the game, too. It's a lot like Betrayal in that it's really an experience rather than a serious game, but it's oh so fun when you are in the right mood. I wish it wasn't so expensive or I'd get it for my son, as he'd love it.

But MAN does that app drain the battery!

After Mansions, Mike said he had only played Ra on the app. So we quickly corrected him - that meant he had never ACTUALLY played Ra.

Because really, Ra is not about collecting monuments or gods or floods for your rivers or any of that. Ra is about those moments when that jerk with the 1 tile sitting to your right calls Ra AGAIN, for the SIXTH ROUND IN A ROW, and you realize what butts your friends really are. THAT'S what Ra is about. And so we showed Mike the error of his ways and he quickly agreed that he had never played Ra before, no, not really.

Or maybe he was playing us, now that I think about it, since HE WON. Hmmm... A revenge killing may be in order. (Now that I'm Princess again, I can just order these kinds of things, right?)

A cold & rainy afternoon at The Game Preserve led to getting to play 13 Days: The Cuban Missile Crisis with Dan, another of the store employees.

He lost SO bad, SO fast - went to the highest Defcon level in the first round. Ooops. He admitted he had played way too aggressively - I guess there's a REASON why we don't let people under 35 become president... We're planning a rematch soon, let's see if he's learned anything from blowing up the world :)

Also played the first game of Aeon's End with my son.

We did the standard opening scenario, since he had not played before. He's played a lot of deckbuilders though, and caught on fast. This is gonna get a lot of play at my house, and my son is really impressed with me now for having gotten to work on such a cool game!! :) Ah, kids :)

Now we're on to the best game I've played in awhile - Crisis.

Loved it. Loved the Death of a Salesman meeples. Loved the 'like Caylus but much harsher' vibe. And I came in a DISTANT second - our game actually ended early because SOMEONE and by 'someone' I mean STEVE thought he'd just let the economy tank for a little while and he'd actually jump in and be helpful LATER. Well LATER NEVER COMES BUB!

Actually, I think he got a rule wrong, and if that hadn't happened, it would have gone better for him. As it was, I really enjoyed the struggle and am looking forward to trying this again.

After that, though, was The Time I Stayed One Game Too Long on a Game Night and got into what ended up being a five hour game (with teaching) of Solarius Mission.

Now some of this was because we were all new, the game 'splainer hadn't really KNOWN she was going to be explaining it and wasn't really prepped for it, and we had a full table. But honestly I think the biggest problem here is that this game needs to be about 2/3 of what it actually is. It was like a point salad game where you don't get points - you can do tons of stuff, you have tons of choices, they all give you SOMETHING - but mostly it was so tiny and incremental that it hardly felt worth the trouble.

That said, I enjoyed the main mechanic of the dice, and how you could either upgrade them or move them along the track. When the dice game version of this comes out, I'm in, and I bet it will be the better game for losing some of the messiness.

And finally, finally, FINALLY - I got back to the Saturday Indy Boardgamers meetup! And we finished our game of Pandemic Legacy! In the second play of December, because we literally had TWO more actions we needed to take to win before we ran out in the FIRST game in December!!! :) And then we played Russian Railroads, which I enjoy but suck at. Like so many other games :)

That's all for now. It's my son's birthday week, and we are celebrating with a small present every day. I've got everything from chess puzzles to Mickey Mouse comic collections to the latest Beast Academy books lined up. Today's gift was Kobold's Guide to Board Game Design and Hero Realms. So I know I'll be gaming again soon :)

The only difference is that the Research (2 cards) doesn't stack.

Specifically, doesn't stack with another Reseach (2 cards) sticker. It stacks just fine with Research +X stickers.

just be aware that the rules say that "The receiving player
must accept or refuse, and no other tokens, goods, currency, or cards
may be exchanged."

This means he can decline the offer.

Also, if it hasn't happened yet you can still stop it. Beat him to it or stop him being able to gather the goods he needs either by beating him to them or sinking a ship :)

A few rules clarifications via email for Box 5:

[o]
> 1. Regarding the When the Masques Fall milestone: Is that triggered when we shine the Light of Truth on the back of one the advisors that reveals the map icon with the +5 successes text, or is there an entry in the captain's book we should be waiting to discover still?

The former. As soon as you find the +5 success card.

> 2. Are those +5 successes used only for the find the island at the end of the world endeavor, or can they be used on other endeavors too?

Any, but they are dismissed liked any other chart so use them wisely.

> 3. Are those advisors dismissed upon use, or do they stay in the council? And do they have to be refreshed to use?

See above. But they do not have to be refreshed.

> 4. When exploring the hidden sections of the tombs map, do you need to hold the all three tablets of the matching symbols in your treasure room to explore the map, or is merely having held it at one point and keeping the note of the matching symbol enough? Or is that up to the players to decide?

You just have to be able to look up the correct three digit number, either by having the tablets or by knowing it/having written it down earlier.

1) I agree that makes sense -- but I don't see any rule anywhere that says that it does. (Similar to how the Port upgrade seems like it should un-exhaust ship upgrades, like a repair action, but as worded, seems to only remove damage cards.) Without errata, it seems like the written rules don't indicate that it's refreshed when stolen by one of those advisors.
2) Oops! Yes, tablets. :) Thank you.

3/4) Ah, that would make sense. But where is the rule that says they are usable on the owning player's turn?

So if I have a "Research (2 cards)" on my leader and an advisor with +1 research then I would get to draw 3 cards and keep one for 3 gold when taking an explore action?

[o]1. There are no rules that I know of, other than the raiding rules in the base game. My group also agreed to play this way.
2. Again, no rules. My group chose to leave tablets exhausted, as there is no other mechanism that allows a tablet to refresh within a game.
3/4. Again, no rule. We also played that only the tablets that say "at any time" can be used outside of the owner's turn. Although, to be fair, this conflicts with our ruling that the Observatory can be used outside of a player's turn. Like the game, we are inconsistent at times.[/o]

[o]Number 4 This conflicts with a quote in another thread that is supposed to have come from Daviau himself. In that thread the answer was that the original intent was for a player to have possession of the 3 tablets.[/o]
