Thread: Betrayal at House on the Hill:: General:: Will this work for my group

I've been thinking about this game for a while, and the news of the upcoming expansion has brought it back onto the radar, but i have a couple of concerns.

1.) Most of the time, we're gaming with 3 or 4. Does this game really work with small groups, or is it really a 5-6 player only?

2.) With most games we play, i'll be the only one who has actually read the rules, and be teaching it to the others - if I'm not the traitor, is the game going to collapse?

From experience, this game works well with 3 or more players.

By the time the traitor is revealed, everyone should have an understanding of the basic operation of the game. There is a catch though, in that the traitor player must read and understand the new rules when that time comes. This usually amounts to 5-10 minutes of downtime for the traitor and protagonists to comprehend their new rules. If your players are really compelled by the horror theme, I would not lose any sleep over it. However, if your players are really adverse to reading a half page worth of text in order to get to an exciting conclusion, this could be an issue.

I've played games from 3 to 6 players and I've also watched a 8-player game on an event (2 players played for one character). Most of the time I taught them the basic rules of the game and the group caught up on how to play by the time the haunt started.
Once though the traitor had issues understanding on how monsters work but that can be explained at the time by reading the basic rules again.
You'll do just fine :)

Wowwwwwwwwwww! September was a shocker!

[o]We lost our Quarantine specialist, who happened to be our Researcher's co-worker. We had pulled all our early resources to get to the paranoid soldier. With the Quarantine specialist gone, we fought an uphill battle that we lost valiantly with the worse possible outcome (8 outbreaks, first collapsing city). The game took us TWICE as long as our other games, because of how shaken we were, and how the uphill battle was tense all game long!!

Pandemic Legacy is great. Emotions in board games? Check![/o]

I love the timing of the release - just in time for Halloween!

Fleet cards are ships that you can add to the taskforce on your side of the ocean.

I'm sure this game is long gone for most. But to clarify, for those who might be looking to get this game (and to hint at more variety in gameplay), the cards are not all 'ships'. Any card playable to a 'fleet' counts towards the 5 card max per ocean -- this includes aircraft, minefields, fog, depth charges.

I agree that it is 'a surprisingly good little game'. It's a clever and challenging game -- with a reasonably involving narrative and interaction to it, rather than an extreme abstraction with almost no relationship to its actual topic -- as was the original boardgame, which one might think it would be similar to. Not pretending it's a 'simulation', of course.

Thread: Pandemic Legacy: Season 1:: Rules:: Question/clarification on Objectives (slight May spoilers)

Ok -

After looking at the rulebook agian, I think I got this...but just want to make sure. We're in May (lost the first time, will try again tomorrow). At this point, I have 4 objectives:

- Discover cures to the 3 normal diseases (mandatory)
- Have military bases in the 6 regions of the world
- quarantine 7 faded cities
- eradicate at least 1 disease

Now, May has 3 stars on - that means that all 4 of the objectives are active...but we just have to finish 3 of the, correct?

More specifically, since the first one is mandatory, that has to be completed, leaving us needing to complete any 2 of the other 3...correct?

In our first play of May, I thought I had to pick the 3 (or 2, since 1 of the 3 was mandatory) we were going to try for before we started the month.

You always line up all the objectives you have. During the game, you have a specific number that you have to complete. Currently, you have those 4, and you must complete the mandatory objective plus any two more.

As soon as 3 (including the cures) are completed - even mid turn - the game will end immediately. You don't need to pick any in advance, but obviously your character choice will steer towards certain options.

Ok, thanks - that's what I thought...but since we did it wrong, I wanted to confirm. I assume we'll lose some of the objectives as we get further along...

Yes you need to complete 3 of the 4 objectives. Yes the "cure three diseases" one is mandatory, so you can complete that one and any of the other two to complete the month.

No you don't need to pick before you start the month which objectives

Rules Page 4:

OBJECTIVES
At the beginning of each game, you will have an objective (or objectives) you need to complete in order to win. The number of objectives needed to win in a month is shown on the board for that month. If an objective is marked as mandatory, it must be completed in order to win. You do not need to decide which other objectives you are trying to accomplish at the beginning of any game; you may wait to see how the game unfolds.

Thread: Pandemic Legacy: Season 1:: General:: We accidentally cheated... any suggestions? :\ (spoilers up to end of August)

We have been playing Pandemic Legacy and going really well so far until we suddenly realised at the end of our last game (August) that we had forgotten the Accelerated Incubation rule about adding Faded figures whenever you draw a CoDA city card from the player deck, which I think came out at the start of May.

We think we've forgotten this for July and August, and we won both of those months pretty easily - including successfully searching out the Virologist and Immunologist.

With four months left to go, the fact that we've been missing this rule obviously means we have not had as much difficulty for the last two months as we should have, and our world probably has less persistent damage (panic, Faded spreading) than it might have if we'd remembered.

I don't want our victory to feel hollow and undeserved, and I feel like we need to do something to restore the balance and make sure the rest of the Season is at the level of difficulty it should be. But replaying those two months is obviously impossible.

Any suggestions?

Request: please put suggested solutions in spoiler tags, so anyone else reading the thread will have a chance to think of their own ideas before they're influenced. Thank you

The rulebook suggests to reduce funding. Having won a couple in a row, that may not be possible, but it's the official option.

If you replayed an entire month (say August), you would more than make up for the missed cards.

I got the game two weeks ago. Read the rules three times. We just played our first time and they all picked it up quickly. We had 3 people and the game moved smoothly. We all loved it. We got stuck once and the Betrayal wiki clarified our confusion. I highly reccomend if you like horror or games with a little story. Some in game reading required.

I'd go a tiny bit further: play an extra between-month game now, in which you take the long-term damage but don't advance through the legacy deck and don't get any game-end bonuses.

Accelerated Incubation is actually a really big deal. Through the whole season, our team lost six games; without it we might not have lost any. The risk of pulling a city from the bottom of the infection deck that's already been seen in the player deck is enough to make one a bit... jumpy!
