Widow's Walk Brings More Betrayal to the House on the Hill
Avalon Hill delivered a shock to many gamers on April 20, 2016 by announcingWidow's Walk, a huge expansion for Bruce Glassco's Betrayal at House on the Hill that will hit stores on October 14, 2016. Here's an overview of the expansion from the publisher:
Get it? Widow's Walk includes a roof for the house and "terror and panic are taken to a whole new level"? Good multi-level wordplay there; perhaps Selinker wrote that text himself...
The Avalon Hill announcement lists more than forty people who are credited with contributing to the haunts included in Widow's Walk, and the list includes names that you'd expect to see from the base game (Glassco, Selinker, Rob Daviau), names of other board and card game designers (e.g., Paul Peterson, Justin Gary, Liz Spain, Christopher Badell, Jonathan Gilmour, Elisa Teague), and names that you probably wouldn't have expected (e.g., Adventure Time's Pendleton Ward, Feminist Frequency's Anita Sarkeesian, Cards Against Humanity's Max Temkin, Depression Quest's Zoë Quinn, The Doubleclicks' Angela Webber).
As for the compatibility of Widow's Walk with the existing editions of Betrayal at House on the Hill— both the original from 2004 and the 2010 second edition — Michael Robles, Community Manager at developer Lone Shark Games, has noted on Reddit that the expansion "is compatible with all editions".
The house on the hill has a wicked reputation. Those who dare to darken its door often leave steeped in madness and despair — if they leave at all.
Now the horror reaches new heights with Widow's Walk, the first-ever expansion for the critically acclaimed board game Betrayal at House on the Hill. The house is expanded with the addition of twenty new rooms, including the roof, a previously unexplored floor. Also in its halls you will find new monsters, items, omens, events, and fifty brand-new haunts, penned by lead developer Mike Selinker's all-star cast of contributors from the world of gaming and entertainment. In Widow's Walk, terror and panic are taken to a whole new level.
Enter if you dare. Exit if you can...

Reply: Betrayal at House on the Hill:: News:: Re: A expansion is coming in fall of 2016
by BruceGee
Hi! I'm the original designer, so I'll try to answer as many questions as I can. Mike just told us to head out to all the various fora and talk it up, so here I am.Mike Selinker (one of the game's original editors, along with Rob Daviau and Bill McQuillan) has really been the point man on this project. There are bunches of new rooms, new tiles, new items, etc. etc. The most exciting idea behind the expansion, though, was to solicit ideas for Haunts from a whole bunch of cool and creative people inside and outside the game industry! So whenever you draw a new Haunt, not only do you get to find out what hideous monster you're facing, but also what amazing person it was who designed it. I contributed a scenario, but that was about the extent of my involvement this time around -- the assembly and playtesting was all Mike. Fortunately, that means it was in good hands.
Other than differences in minor things like tile thickness, there aren't that many differences between the first and second edition, so I don't see why it shouldn't be compatible with either one. Any other questions?

Thread: Pandemic Legacy: Season 1:: General:: Yes, you CAN keep playing Pandemic after you finish the campaign [NO SPOILERS]
by xanalor
I know there are other threads similar to this, but they get buried pretty quickly, and this seems to be a frequently asked question among potential buyers... There are NO spoilers in this thread, as I only reference the unaltered rulebook and stickers on the starting sticker sheet. That out of the way...Now that we've finished our Pandemic Legacy campaign, I decided to keep the game to use for regular Pandemic. Here's what I did:
1. Remove all stickers from cards in the player deck (ex. unfunded events). These come off easily, with no residue or damage to the cards. One FYI note on this... It was about three (real-time) months between the start and end of my campaign. Some of the older stickers were a LITTLE more difficult to peel off, emphasis on "a little". But obviously the longer cards stay stickered, they greater possibility that they won't come off cleanly. So if you take a full year to actually play through your campaign, it might take a little extra work to desticker some of the cards.
2. Remove all stickers from the board (ex. starting research centers) EXCEPT for panic level and positive mutations. Again, the stickers come off easily. I chose to leave the panic level and mutation stickers for a few reasons. First, they are easily ignored when playing vanilla Pandemic, so no reason to remove them. Second, they're a nice reminder of our campaign. And finally, it allows us the option to play a variant in the future where we follow the restrictions for traveling to and from panicked cities (to make the game harder) and/or use the positive mutations (to make the game easier).
3. If you are instructed to destroy a non-Legacy component, just set it aside in the box instead of actually ripping it up. The actual act of physically destroying a card might be fun and/or cathartic, but you can safely play through a full campaign without ACTUALLY tearing your cards to pieces. And hey, if you want to destroy anything that shows up in the legacy deck, go to town. You won't need any of those cards for base pandemic (obviously).
4. If you don't want to play with a slightly modified map, use unused stickers (ex. a destroyed research center) from the game to block off the following connections:
Santiago <--> Lima
Lima <--> Los Angeles
Buenos Ares <--> Johannesburg
Also add connections from Chennai to Bangkok and Baghdad to Karachi (you can do this with a white sharpie, or a thin strip of plain white border from the sticker sheet).
Now that alone makes the game fully playable after you're done. However, it's even better than that...
The card backs for the Player Deck and Infection Deck are 100% compatible with the current edition Pandemic expansions. So I went ahead and picked up On the Brink (2nd Edition), In the Lab and State of Emergency. Full disclosure, the card sizes are ever-so slightly different, but not so much that it affects shuffling or that you'd notice at all when drawing cards off the player deck. The important thing is that the colors match, so there's no noticeable difference to the naked eye.
When using expansions, the ONLY incompatibility is the character cards. However, the abilities of the Researcher, Medic, Scientist, Dispatcher, and Generalist are the same as regular Pandemic, so you can just use those alongside the expansion roles if you want. (And ignore any Scars or Upgrades you may have placed on the characters, or if you want, use them in a variant.) Or you can do what I did and print proxies of all the base Pandemic characters that were not reprinted in an expansion and sleeve both those and all the expansion characters.
(NOTE: If you play without expansions, you can just use the characters that come with Pandemic Legacy with no proxies or alteration needed.)
After you remove all the secret boxes from your Pandmic Legacy box, there's ample room to store all expansion components, so you can comfortably fit Pandemic and all three expansions in the one box.
Bottom line, anyway who thinks this game needs to be recycled or trashed when it's done is flat out wrong. No, you can't feasibly play through the campaign again (not without a lot of effort that I personally would not be willing to go through), but "resetting" the board and cards to play base Pandemic takes a matter of minutes.
If you're on the fence about Pandemic Legacy because of the seeming "disposable" aspect of it, I highly recommend you go ahead and make the buy. Not only is the full campaign alone worth the entry cost, but you WILL have a fully playable Pandemic game afterwards, to keep and play for as long as you want.

Working w/ 1st ed was my only real concern. I have yet to play a 2nd ed copy, so I didn't know if tile/card backs etc might have changed or anything.↧

Session: Pandemic Legacy: Season 1:: Game 6 - May (Spoilers)
Characters:
Operations Expert: Nick
Scientist: Natasha
Researcher: Nanci
Quarantine Specialist: Nora
Game 6 - May
As the month of May began the situation had intensified and the “Faded” were spreading faster than ever. The different militaries were not being helpful either. So Nora and Nick started quarantining off the areas we knew were affected by the “Faded” while Natasha and Nanci tried to work on keeping the other 3 diseases in check.
Once Nick got through quarantining a few cities he went to work putting up temporary military bases across the world to help maintain order. He was doing well until a couple of Epidemics got him side tracked with a few outbreaks. Natasha was trying to help get these outbreaks under control when Nanci had a breakthrough and met Natasha for the cures for Yellow and Black. Things were starting to look good.
Then Nora got blindsided by an outbreak in North America that spread all the way down the east coast. She immediately started quarantining city by city, and thought she found some knowledge from a friend of a friend, but it turned out to be false information. The result trapped her in a “Faded” city that almost cost her life.
Meanwhile, Nick helped Natasha and Nanci eradicate Yellow, but then got word that Shanghai had another outbreak and a riot burned down the research station. Nick shutdown after that, and buried himself in his work. Finally, he got all the regions around the world with a military base setup.
Quarantining the “Faded” cities wasn’t holding with Nora becoming Paranoid with tips coming in to help. Nora said she would only accept help from Nanci and Natasha. But they were working hard to try to find a cure for Red and just when we had it in our grasps. An epidemic and mass outbreaks spread across Southeast Asia and Hong Kong has started to collapse. This will push us into late May.
Luckily the Yellow disease is becoming easier to cure each month as we have found more chemical compounds to combat it. Also, New York has agreed to finally build a permanent military base after what they saw Nora dealing with. They also recommended we start using road blocks to stall the spread of the “Faded.”

A little bit of both from my experience.
I think it was just dependent on the copy you had, because there was issues I ran into with certain 1st ed versions. But I have personally run into more issues with the second edition then the first.
