The issue with such sets is that the heroes are too similar, and it would be challenging to design abilities and entire card decks with unique gameplay mechanics.

Maybe. Maybe not. So a bigger variety. I could see a Rocky fighter playing very different from Rambo or Commando. An underdog boxer who gets knocked down but keeps getting back up and hitting harder and harder. Then Rambo, Commando, or Norris as that special forces military fighter who lays traps, hides, ambushes, and has some heavy firepower. The A-Team could use cards from their deck to build interesting weapons. Or even better.....A card that gives a handful of possible builds the team can make if they "steal" a certain number or order of boost value cards from the enemy discard pile. This would mirror they many instances in which the enemy trapped the team in a barn or shop somewhere, and they had everything they needed in that shop to build a tank, a flamethrower, an airplane.... And surely a detective-type fighter from the 80's, would play different. Can't you see Cagney and Lacey using something like a clue mechanic? Or maybe Magnum, along with his trusty sidekicks?

As inventive as the good folks are at Restoration Games, I think they could come up with some awesome art and builds for such a collection that would really hit a large chunk of those 40-50-something players (especially in the US) in the sweet spot. I don't know big that demographic is among their customers, but I suspect it's significant enough to warrant a thought.

Come to think of it.... let's do a two-player set. "Murder She Wrote" versus "Matlock." I'd buy a set like that to pit them against Sherlock. lol. Who wouldn't like to see Angela Lansbury whoop somebody good.

If I remember correctly if there are no more fire tokens available and you need to put one on your board because of the movement you immediately take damage.

no, that would be a mistake

Oh, yes, you are right. It says only to take wound token instead, not to take wound. My bad.

The only thing that's essential to playing the game and enjoying it is a core box, either (Cthulhu: Death May Die or Cthulhu: Death May Die – Fear of the Unknown).

If you enjoy the game a lot a want more variety I'd then look at picking up the other core box or Cthulhu: Death May Die – Season 2 Expansion and/or Cthulhu: Death May Die – Season 4 Expansion.

If you pick up all four you'll have 24 episodes, 5 Great Old ones (boses), 36 playable characters and plenty of other bits (relics, insanities and unknown monsters). That'll give you more then enough variety that the you'll never play the same set up twice.

Now if you are a big fan and like your minatures you could always pick up the additional Great Old One's; Cthulhu: Death May Die – Yog–Sothoth, Cthulhu: Death May Die – Black Goat of the Woods&Cthulhu: Death May Die – Fear of the Unknown: Ithaqua the Wind-Walker.

As for the promo content it's nice to have but in no way essential. As someone who backed the original Kickstarter, comics vol.1 & 2 and had this game for a long time now I can tell you from my experience, promo content doesn't get played half as much as the content in the core box and season 2. Hunting down the promo content will cost you a lot of money, it will add slightly more variety to your games but it won't really elevate your experience, the retail content is better in my opinion.

Like collecting any game, buying more will have diminishing returns. I see the promos as a nice little bonus for getting in early and backing the game but if you miss the boat it isn't worth paying aftermarket prices for it.

Thanks so much for the summary, that's extremely helpful! Games with this amount of content can look quite daunting when so much Kickstarter exclusive material has been released over so many years, and with aftermerket prices being what they are. I recall initially feeling like I had completely missed the boat when looking over years worth of expansion materials and add-ons. It's great to know that the meat and potatoes of the system can be had at retail. 🙂👍

When I decided to get into DMD with the most recent KS, knowing how hard some stuff would be to get made it an easy decision not to try to get everything. I didn't even bother with the Unspeakable Box. I figure I have plenty of content without it.

I'm thinking of buying this. Question for everybody that has bought and played this game: do you feel it is worth the price in the end?

I own a lot of games, some of them were (really) expensive, it is one of them, but I really enjoy this game and each play we did. I think it was worth my money (which is not the case for all my games), but maybe not all people share my feeling

My wife and I definitely do, I'm extra biased because I wanted the original as a boy in the early eighties but we were too poor for things like that.

Still, we love the gameplay and the tower is just so cool. It's the centerpiece of our collection.

Personally, I love it. It's among my top all-timers, enough so that it even got me to hunt down a working copy of the original. That said, it won't be for everyone. Anyone not into app-driven games should avoid it. It's definitely built for cooperative play, so if you mostly want competitive, its not as great. It's also worth noting that you can use one expansion at a time, not both.

I mean I have no idea what $200 or whatever you'll pay means to you, so it's pretty hard to say if it's "worth it" financially. I think if you've seen reviews and understand basically how it works and that looks cool to you, it will in fact be cool. The tower is a pretty excellent piece of equipment.

Expensive but great game. Depends on your finances imho. For me this was a no brainer but my finances and yours could be wildly different. Only you can decide this.

We love co-ops, and I loved the game when I was a kid. It was a no brainer for me,

High cost of entry but an incredibly fun and interesting and unique game experience for us. We’ve played through all the adversaries, and then played them all again with the Alliances expansion.

And then AGAIN with the newest Covenant expansion, and so I’d most definitely say I’ve gotten my enjoyment out of it.
