Ugh. It's hard to tell you what to do. Because of spoilers, of course, but also because it's hard to tell where things are going wrong for you because we don't have the details. Are you going wrong strategically? Tactically?

There are lots of tips in forums, but some that leap to mind:

1. Hang in there. I think that the spring can be some of the tougher months. I don't want to say why for spoiler reasons, but in general the earliest months you have a lot of supplies and few cities. The later months you have the advantages given to you via discovery and upgrades. But there can be an awkward adolecent phase where you don't yet have the advantages but are starting to get pressure from the expansion of cities. February was the only month we lost, pretty much for this reason.
2. Strategically it seems like you are planning ahead, but since you don't mention details: make sure you read the plot cards. Following the advice there is important, both to relieve pressure and also so don't find that you've painted yourself into an unwinnable state.
3. Efficiency is important. Especially early on. Dropping a single cube is almost always a bad idea. It's too inefficient.
4. Count cards. Know where the infection deck is likely to hit. Know when epidemics are going to hit.
5. Pick upgrades wisely. Again, it sounds like you may be doing this, but you NEED to recon and you NEED to build supply centers. Getting cards to people is expensive in terms of time, so anything you do to make supply centers and recon easier is worth it.
5. The clock is short, especially in early months. Be aware and plan accordingly. Although it is OK, and even advisable, to go for strategic improvements, you need to always have a plan to win and win quick.

Frankly, with the amount of rationed events you guys have, you should have the tools to be winning games. I'm not sure where you are struggling since there is nothing obviously wrong you are doing from what you've written.

I very much appreciate you taking the time to share this advice. I really want to enjoy this, and to get my group excited about it; it just gets harder with each loss. Honestly, at the end of almost every game that we lost, we had two supply centers and all the cards needed to either get the last one and win, or at least Recon. And then we got killed by the cards. And we almost always start our and keep drawing in such a way that each person has just one of each color of city. We have to meet up and trade cards, and it kills the tempo.

Now...

[o]We've had the ability to put infection cards into Box 6 for a while, so we are thinning out the deck. I'm hoping next time we play we can just have someone focus on keeping the few remaining cities supplied, and the rest of us can work on cards.... That seems like it will give us the win. It kind of stinks that we now have 7 Epidemic cards, because we connected cities all crazy throughout North and South America. We are just trying to recon Asia and Europe, but we keep getting killed right before we can do it. We're hoping we can make it happen in May.[/o]

Anyway, I will try to apply some of your points here, and add them to our strategy. Hopefully we can get out of the woods and have some fun, interesting months in the future.

It's interesting reading posts like this, because my wife and I are starting to think things are getting too easy, and we're expecting the game to smack us down like season 1 did every time we got too comfortable. Some of our ease probably comes from playing two player - so more concentrated cards, but less variety of special abilities. I'm going to be vague so as not to spoil anything.

We always play the guy that can build supply centers for 4 cards+2 supplies, and we've upgraded him so he needs one less card. Being able to build supply centers for 3 cards(less with Foundations) means we can finish the mandatory objective super fast. That character also has the "take any card from same location player" upgrade for assembling sets easily. It's analogous to having the upgraded Scientist with upgraded diseases in season 1.

My wife has been playing the farmer, with "deliver adjacent" and "exchange from the discard" as upgrades, but we're thinking of retiring him as keeping the grid supplied has become rather trivial given box 6 and liberal use of the new mechanics granted therein.

We did have a rocky March, losing twice. Those have been our only losses and June was so easy we did 4 objectives just because we could, saving the mandatory one for last. About the only thing I feel we've missed is that we haven't searched [o]Buenos Aires[/o], which is hinted at as special but we haven't drawn the card since getting the hint(and we connected it in February before the hint came up). I'd also like to adjust the player deck more using box 6 stuff, but we find it's a lot rarer to meet the conditions for the player deck than the infection deck. Go figure.

We're going to push for searching the Indian Ocean and maybe recon Asia finally in July, if we can actually get 4 different black cards.

May/June was where things started getting easier for our group.A couple more tips based on your spoiler:

[o]Don't forget that you can put player cards into box 6 too. That can help you manage the Epidemic count, get you to Rationed Events faster, and get more black cards in the rotation for the Cairo recon.

If you want a subtle hint about recon priorities:

[o]Europe unlocks something that'll make it much easier to get around. Asia unlocks something that changes the game for both good and bad.[/o][/o]

As we've been playing through the game over the past six weeks or so, I've been on here a lot - and it seems like most posters fall into one of two groups:

1) Those that struggle a bit through March/April, but get by and go on to find the middle months of the year relatively straightforward (at least from a Win/Loss perspective), and
2) Those that get absolutely killed in March/April, and struggle to retain the enthusiasm to keep going.

We're fortunately in Group 1 (and having a great time, although actually wish we were a little more challenged in June/July/August); the other group we know in real life playing are squarely in Group 2.

Hard to say exactly what distinguishes the two groups - and luck is certainly a part of it. For example (spoiler for a city search post-South American recon):
[o]We searched Buenos Aires on literally the first player turn in February - thanks to reconning South America in January, and then getting a lucky deal. We must have already used that extra ability at least 100 times in the eight games since.[/o]

In terms of tactics.....although there's not much original here.....

Spoilers for post-Recon
[o]- We've definitely been aggressive in connecting and searching, and that helps. Almost every search gives you something that can help, and some (e.g. Box 6) are game changers
- We were also aggressive in our Box 6 use which made subsequent games easier. Although we're still waiting for that to come back and bite us
- Broker is so crucial. Without it (or its cousins you get later in the game), we wouldn't have been able to do half the recons and searches that we've achieved. And we didn't use it until late. If I played a second game, it would be the first upgrade added
- It's an obvious one but Laborer-Architect + the take any card ability is a super-powered combo for the mandatory objective through the early months. So is Farmer-Courier for plague defense.[/o]

Main suggestion to the OP is to hang in there because the difficulty level is about to ease.....in fact should be already be easing if you're in May and have already opened Box 6.....

Thank you so much, Greg and Tony. I'm more enthused about going forward. Oddly, everyone says they had trouble with March, but that's the only month we passed on the first try (i.e. "early"). Probably because of all the Event cards we had from previous losses.

In any case, I'll share these points with my group, and hopefully we can have some good plays this weekend.

Thanks again!

Thanks Nick.

Have to say when I first heard about it, I wasn't very excited; maybe if I had had some nostalgia for the original, but not having played it, I hadn't.

But yep, having read much more about it, and seen the prototype board, I am intrigued. It's definitely not a must buy yet, which Stop Thief was for me, however, I will be keeping a close eye on this one.

Given nostalgia and memories I'm going in for the full pledge. Given Restoration's track record I'd say that backing the base game would give you great value. There's the toy aspect of the game that gives great table presence, but then you add in the more modern mechanics to the board making it a fun race to the finish. I know that it will fit a great spot in my collection that I can play with my 5 y/o daughter or my board gaming group. I've already shown some pictures to my daughter and she's asking when we can get it.

my 6 year old daughter has played this with us twice and won the game (but not the race) both times. she bought two cars each game, didn't overpay for them, got both cars to the finish line, and correctly bet on the eventual 1st or 2d place car at each betting line.

It sounds like you might be playing wrong as you can only bet on the first place winner... or else I've been playing wrong :what: The only games I've had where the first place didn't win was when they didn't bet on themselves because they didn't know what they were doing. Our group has pretty much evolved to everyone just bidding on themselves because then if you win first place you will win overall. I've tried to talk them out of that, but if one person is doing it then everyone might as well because if they win then they will win overall.

As I've said before, I initially liked this game until we realized that it is almost impossible to catch the leader and when they bet on themselves then they will win. I really think if they make a map that has more spaces on the outside of the corners and less on the inside that will really truly change the game. As it is right now, if you are in the lead you have the greatest advantage because you have the least chance of getting stuck when your movement is played. Actually I think the single lanes are the most annoying thing because that only benefits the leader and hurts everyone behind that can't pass.

I did see the new map that had the loop in it, but that almost seemed like a work around on trying to be able to make cars in the back block the cars in the front. I always find it extremely hard to play a card just right to block any other cars unless it is on a single wide track since the cars can move diagonally between two other cars. I really think I am going to try making my own map and see how that works. Hopefully I'll have an update for everyone shortly.

Vegas, 1000 miles away from where I first started playing my beloved game. So eine Schande. I would make another sad face, but don't want to be redundant about the tragedy of it all. What to do.

While reading a review here, my hands and eyes moved faster than my brain and I was spoiled on one facet of the story. Can anyone tell me in which month you learn the below fact? I want to know how long I'm going to have to keep it a secret.

Some more thoughts:

1. I wonder if you are getting a rule wrong somewhere. You seem to be doing too many things right to be losing this much. Are you adding plague during step 2 of epidemics if there are no supplies (you shouldn't be)?

2. I agree with Tony's first spoiler. That was something we got in February as well, and it's huge. It single handedly is why I think we didn't suffer as much in March/April as others say they have. It's one of the many of the things I'm obliquely referring to when I say "pay attention to the plot hints".

3. I reiterate the point that you should be over some of the toughest parts. You seem to now have the tools for long-term success (such as Box 6 and discard pile manipulation) and it's a matter of building up that advantage.

4. Speaking of which, you mention having broker. Do you have some foundations/infrastructure cards in the deck? There's nothing like using a single card for building a supply center, and then fetching it from the discard the next turn to build another.

Box 6 spoilers (which I know you have, but spoiler boxing for other people's benefit)

[o]
3. You are right to manipulate the infection deck. That should help.

4. As Greg points out, manipulating the player deck with Box 6 is also huge. Thinning out the "basic" cards both helps your epidemic ratios and recon ratios but also increases the power of your broker power by increasing the percentage of high powered player cards.

I wish I had read this closer to when I finished up my own campaign; I might be able to give you more details. I played a series of two-handed games by myself; final record was 11-4.

The two big things that I disliked about S1 were things you identified as well: a) the searches, which felt somewhat half-baked for reasons I can't fully express (though "hey you did the thing, have some flavor text with no immediate effect", as you say, was probably part of it), and b) playing well means no funded events. Choosing funded events partially in reaction to board state and anticipated team felt like a good way to be clever, and it would have been nice if the funding floor had been some number above zero.

The physical design of the legacy deck was great; just unfolding additional characters from it was a clever surprise. Perhaps the fact that the search boards needed to lie flat on the table after having been folded also contributed to my dissatisfaction with the feature, but for some reason I didn't have quite the same reaction to them.

The "nuclear option" upgrade was a "whoa" moment, although it did feel a little like a trap (I did not use it).

It was kind of a bummer that, immediately prior to the fateful search that lost me my Soldier, I applied Pluripotent Stem Cells to a card. It was pure dumb luck that I never drew that card again at a useful point in a game.

Relationships were great, although in a two-handed game "friends" and "family" seemed pretty weak. One more subtle effect of introducing the relationship rules the way they did was to slightly nerf whatever collection of characters got used in January -- if, like me, you picked the seeming "best" combination for that game, well, now there's this extra layer of synergy those characters will never get to have (in addition to the other reasons to play new characters, of course).

For the December search, I too had lost my Soldier due to the surprise, and I wound up putting the Generalist in for the first time for the purpose of being rivals with the Immunologist, to get more use out of binoculars and aerosol units.

I also spent a fair bit of the campaign afraid to commit to things (e.g. putting the obvious medic upgrade on the medic) for fear of having a better possible recipient come along later. In retrospect, I don't feel that most such commitments would have been punished, and that's to the game's credit. And while I agree about feeling relatively hamstrung by the limited number of upgrade opportunities, it did not rub me the wrong way in the same way that limited funding did, perhaps because some months where I had not eradicated a disease it wasn't clear what upgrades I could usefully take.

Another clever thing about military bases, that I wish the game had explored a bit more: even after you have switched over to wanting / needing to destroy them in order to vaccinate faded cities, they are still useful for some things. I found a certain amount of tension between needing to destroy them for game reasons but also wanting to keep some of them around for their other uses (transport, equipment).

edited to add: It's interesting what you say about vanilla Pandemic. For me Pandemic Legacy deepened my appreciation for the system and improved my opinion of it a fair bit, both in terms of noticing the cleverness of the infection system and also noticing more opportunities to be clever about using the various tools given to the players (for example New Assignment was a card that I had looked at several times and never seen the point of).

Además de eso, existen varias discrepancias de traducción entre el libreto y el resto de los componentes. La mejor solución es ponerse de acuerdo entre los jugadores en el momento que surjan esas discrepancias.

My group accomplished this milestone and there is some disagreement on what one of the rules mean. The card states: For this game only, the aliens collaborator and the aliens are one faction and the troops can be intermixed.

Does this mean that all troops can draw on both powers because of the “one faction” statement of the rule?
