Okay, I've been through everything and don't have a sticker W (it was supposed to be in the package with the Hollow Men, correct?). I suspect I know what it says, but would appreciate confirmation.

Thanks in advance.

[o]c. If a location has 1 or more Hollow Men figures in it, reduce its population by 1. If the location has both Plague cubes and Hollow Men figures, its population is only reduced by 1.[/o]

And in this season, the most common required objective (3 supply centers), doesn't even force you to use different colors and the game gives you ways to play with your deck to filter towards specific colors that you think you'll need, and ways to draw cards from the discard, either to handle uniqueness for recons and/or just getting cities for searches, and eventually, just getting more cards of the same color for building.

If someone thinks the game is ruined by the deck not giving you what you need, or a bad initial setup, then you just don't like pandemic, and if you don't like pandemic, why did you even buy season 1, let alone season 2?

Fair enough, no argument with that.

I think the counter-argument is that there is just a little more variance in Season 2, compared to Season 1 or Vanilla.

Because it's important not only which color, but also on occasions (e.g. Retcons, or Searches until the player realizes the value of Broker) which color and city, that makes it just that little more likely for the game to not give you what you need.

Again, just playing devil's advocate. I do love the game - probably even more than Season 1......

the official Mars map has grey non-continent territories. So yeah, those.

What do you think it still needs before it's done?

This is awesome! How did you get the rights from Hasbro?

I’m a lawyer by trade. A year’s worth of negotiations. Don’t try this at home. :D

If you don't mind me asking, and if you're inclined to divulge such info... I am fascinated by this aspect of the business so, were the negotiations relatively smooth? Was there any hesitation on Hasbro's part? Had they ever considered doing something new with the property themselves or was it just laying dormant? Had they renewed the copyright on the name over the years and if so, why?

I guess that's multiple questions, but I just find it fascinating. :)

I'm curious on this too! Maybe this could be the next episode of "The Toys That Made Us" on Netflix?

You become collaborator AFTER recruiting so you can't use that as part of recruiting.

as for the 34+10... the 10 aliens go on the island, I THINK the rest is discretionary. You have the option to put them on the island, if you choose.

oops, missed Lomn's reply.

On Twitter they posted the following response to someone's question about price.

"FYI, $60 for the base game ($70 MSRP), and $130 for base + all three expansions ($150 MSRP)."

I think its interesting about how you figure out the value of these properties. They hold nostalgia for the people that used to play them, but if there are no plans to capitalize on them, then they are worthless to the current owners. They gain value only through someone investing in the property to bring it back in a way that makes money. So then the negotiation point is how valuable are they to the person who wants to buy them and what will the current owner take to part with it. Interesting negotiations to be sure.

I think they negotiated with the designer for the rights. I think a common contract is that the rights to a game reverts to the owner unless the game is kept in print (and continues to make royalties for the owner).

For what it's worth, we ended up with this exact same situation in our June game last night.

I think there is a big difference between "we cycled through our entire infection deck" (which is rare but definitely possible) and "we effectively don't have any cards in our infection deck at all" which was the situation described by the OP where the only remaining cards were for forsaken cities. That scenario seemed quite difficult to obtain without a LOT of forsaken cities.

I'm curious how it worked out for OP, but suspect he's going to have a hard time.

We went with trying to minimise the number of hard to get to cities we needed to deal with, so stripped out cards for more remote cities given the choice.

Box 6 spoiler:
[o]That was our original strategy when it was difficult to remove infection cards (e.g. Lockdown). Once we started using Box 6, and it was clear we weren't adding infection cards to that box fast enough, we decided that anything that wasn't a supply center was "remote" enough to remove from the infection deck. We were pretty aggressive in connecting cities so we felt like we wanted to remove them as fast as we were adding them.[/o]

Not sure what else you'd add. The mechanics are totally sound just so new maps and powers seems justified.

6 little stock-cars. So when you win an auction for a car you choose whether you'd like a stock-car or a formula-one car. Or just use all of one, or all of the other.

Purely fluff but that's the first thing I thought would be neat to have. lol

That's why I was wondering about the trademark on the actual name "Fireball Island". If someone was continuing to renew the trademark after all these years, it showed that they had some sort of interest or stake in it, even if just to prevent others from taking the name.

I'm guessing shipping is separate.

It's more complicated than all of that, and I have some confidentiality issues I need to be mindful of. But, speaking generally, there are multiple pieces we need to deal with. The trademark is registered to Longshore, Ltd., a Chinese manufacturer, who is our publishing partner. The art and other artistic elements of the original game are subject to copyright, which is still held by Hasbro -- you'll notice we're not using any original art (which we avoid anyway as part of our restoration approach). Separately, there is the matter of the design of the pieces, such as Vul-Kar himself. Then, there is the issue of the game play. As many of you know, there isn't much in the way of protection for mechanics. However, we have always worked with the original designer as a matter of ethics separate from any legal obligation. We're happy that Bruce Lund is on board and has been happy with our approach.

All in all, it's much more interesting than the debt collection litigation I did for 20+ years before I started Restoration Games.
