I played the game today for the first time in a couple months and there were no issues (iPhone 6+, most recent iOS update). We replayed the thief's locations after discovery and we replayed clues numerous times with no issues. In fact, I wasn't sure how the replay clues feature worked at first and I thought it was broken when I saw footprints when I knew the thief was at a door. I didn't realize at the time that you had to press on the footprints to replay the clue. I thought the path showed you the clues explicitly. That's a unique design choice that I appreciate. Explicit clues would take away the memory component of the game completely.

We saw this coming so we actually stopped doing the things we should have done in order to be able to still complete objectives in future games. Not connecting cities to the grid or doing searches was a bit frustrating, but we got through it because of that. If we had kept playing like we should have, we could have had all possible cities connected in may, and we would have lost at least 3 in a row from not being able to complete 3 objectives.

I am a bit upset that this made it through playtesting.

As I play through Pandemic Legacy Season 2 with some friends, I'm going to post recaps, written from the perspective of the characters we’ve created, in a narrative form. I'll post 1-2 times per month, so that the recaps roughly keep pace with the actual months of the year.

I'll properly tag all spoilers and will note in the post titles what boxes have been opened.

Without further adieu, here's the first entry in The Haven Journals, written after our completion of the Prologue. Hope you enjoy this series!

The Haven Journals
Hale – Q’anyda – December 31, 2086

To all those who read this letter – this is the story of humanity’s heroic last stand, in the face of insurmountable odds. Our leaders have vanished, and supplies are dwindling. Five of us have stepped forward to venture out to the mainland in search of supplies, aid, anything to delay the inevitable. We call ourselves the Last Stand.

My name is Hale, and I’m a radio operator on the haven of Q’anyda. For years, I’ve been communicating with the mainland and other havens to make sure everyone has current information. As much as I’ve learned during that time, I’ve still never left my haven. And for now, I’m still here, communicating with the other members of the Last Stand as they prepare to venture out.

One member of the Last Stand is my eldest brother, Hansel. Actually, he’s my only brother now. While our other brothers were out serving in the field, Hansel stayed at home as a coordinator. He chose the role not because of any innate leadership skills, but due to the lifestyle it offered. He can no longer hide in the safety of our family compound though – he’s the best administrator we’ve got left. I just hope he’s up to the task.

During the last few days I’ve had the chance to meet the other members of the Last Stand as well. There’s Walker, a farmer from the southern colony of Atlantis. ‘Walker’ is his surname, but that’s what he wants to go by now. Walker has a real talent for growing food in harsh conditions – and he literally has a green thumb. Despite his talent, he’s never been offered significant responsibility. As the great-grandson of the traitor Clarence Walker, he has lived his whole life as an outcast. It’s obvious that he bears the scars of that humiliation. But finally, out of necessity, he has been given a chance to clear his family name.

Also hailing from Atlantis is the swarthy sea laborer known as John Starling. He’s still a bit of a mystery to me. From what I hear, he’s made a living doing the work that few others volunteer for or are capable of. I imagine that he cut an impressive figure in his prime, though the years have clearly taken their toll on him. But his weathered exterior is belied by the strength and toughness in his eyes.

The last member of our party is a girl named Sid, a history instructor from New Catalonia. Apprentice history instructor, to be exact. At only 20 years old, she hasn’t yet received her certification. Not ideal, but at this point she’s the best we’ve got. She does show great aptitude, and she’s got talent in her blood – her great grandmother was the famous researcher Dr. Garner, who helped develop a cure to COdA back in the year 2016. Her English is a little rough, so hopefully that’s not too much of an issue.

That’s our entire team – the group tasked with saving life as we know it. This is our Last Stand.

We liked the game a lot, but we found that listening to a couple of clues in replay (touching the footprints, as you say) would make the app completely unresponsive, so we restarted the app and the game a couple of times until we figured out what was happening. If we hit that again, we will try Resume Game.

Grishny's Week in Gaming - November 27 - December 3, 2017

27 November

We had a house full of sick people this week. Amy and Jonathan got sick first, then Matthew, and it finally took me down the day after Thanksgiving. Sneezing, coughing, head and chest congestion, the works. No one was really feeling any better by Monday evening, and regretfully we decided we'd better skip going to game night this week. I'm sure no one at the comic shop wanted us to come share our communicable diseases with them. But that didn't stop me from engaging in some game-related activities such as unboxing a couple of game expansions (Dark Moon: Shadow Corporation and Star Wars Rebellion: Rise of the Empire), or playing some games with the boys later on.

Game: Downforce

It took a week but we finally got this to the table on Monday night. Downforce plays delightfully quickly, and so we got in two full plays of it. This is a 2017 Restoration Games release based on Wolfgang Kramer's Top Race. It plays in about 30-45 minutes and supports 2-6 players. The theme of the game is formula-1 racing and it features bidding, betting, and card-driven movement around the racetrack.

The game begins by auctioning off the six cars to the highest bidders; all six cars (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and black) will participate in every race and every player must "own" at least one car, but there's no limit to how many cars a player can own. Each car has its own speed-8 card; these are shuffled and randomly revealed together with one of six Power cards that represent unique skills of the drivers, one set at a time. Players then bid by secretly submitted one movement card from their hand that includes that car's color on it... highest bidder wins the car and records that bid amount on their scoresheet.

Once everyone has at least one car, any players with more than one choose one of their Power cards to keep and use during that race (the theme falls apart slightly here, but it's not a huge problem). The car miniatures will have already been randomly assigned to their starting positions, and whichever player whose car is in the first spot will take the first turn; then play proceeds clockwise around the table from them.

Each player will have a hand of movement cards, distributed equally and randomly from the deck, with any leftovers returned to the box unused, plus the speed-8 cards of the cars they won in the auction. The majority of these cards include moves for 2-6 cars on them, and each color included on a card played must move that car that many spaces if possible, moving them in order from highest to lowest. If a movement card includes an uncolored wild move, it must be used for a color not already included on that card. When moving a car on the track, it must always go forward, either straight ahead or diagonally ahead. Cars can never shift sideways as a move, and the racetracks (one on either side of the game board) are designed with single-lane bottlenecks and places where another car in front of yours can prevent further movement.

Each track also includes three yellow lines. Each time the lead car crosses one of these, all players must pause and make a bet on which car they believe is going to win the race at that point. At the end of the race, you will score winnings for cars that you wagered on if they came in first, second, or third place, with bonus money for where the cars you owned placed. You'll add all your winnings up and then subtract the total amount you bid for all the cars you owned to get your final score.

The driver powers allow players to bend the rules of the game in various ineresting and strategic ways. For example, one ability allows a player to use Wild moves for a car whose color is already on the move card; another lets you resolve the moves in reverse order whenever desired. In our first game, my ability was to gain two additional moves whenever my car moved only in rectangular spaces on the racetrack (i.e. the straightways), and I won the game by a significant margin by maximizing this (and also because neither of the boys paid attention to the fact that this ability applied to my cars on their turns as well).

I really enjoyed this game and I'm glad I was able to get a copy. Jonathan, who isn't a big fan of racing games, said he thinks this is the best one of the genre that he's played thus far. Matthew said it reminded him a little of Camel Up, which I've never played but have heard includes a similar betting mechanism. Looking forward to playing it more and hopefully trying it out on Amy to see if she'll like it.

Game: Machi Koro

After we finished racing we were still feeling game, so I suggested something we hadn't played in a while. According to BG Stats, our last time playing Machi Koro was February 6 of this year, when I took it to demo at the Comix Connection after Pandasaurus joined the Envoy program. Nine months and three weeks is a pretty long time for a game to go without hitting the table.

There are many criticisms I could make against Machi Koro, but it's still the game I liked and decided to buy after the first time I played it. Admittedly, the first time I played it included the Harbor expansion, which introduces some "necessary" elements to the game that I think it shouldn't be played without. I also don't want to play it again without using the 5-3-5 market decks variant, where the cards are divided into three decks for the 1-6 cards, 7-14s, and a special deck for the purple cards.

Even with these improvements and streamlining of the rules, a good play of Machi Koro still can be highly dependent upon the luck of the cards that come out and the luck of your rolls. This game, I got extremely lucky, putting together a set of six farms and four markets that wound up scoring me 48 coins every time I rolled an 11 or 12. I only raked in that much cash twice, though, and Matthew still beat me to the final Landmark, mostly because i was operating a Demolition Company that I acquired in the early game and was forced to demolish and rebuild my Harbor a total of four times.

2 December

The boys and I spent a few hours at The Game Table board game cafe in Mechanicsburg this afternoon after Jonathan had his SATs at a high school in New Cumberland. We got in several plays of two different titles.

Game: Lazer Ryderz

Our Gamers of Summer/Winter friend Trish joined us for our gaming, and we taught her how to play Lazer Ryderz from Greater than Games. This is the game that folks compare to the "lightcycles" from the TRON movies, where each player is seeking to intersect with three Prizms to win the game while avoiding crashing into the light trails left by their own or their opponent's vehicles.

Jonathan was on a roll playing his favorite color, the purple Phantom Cosmonaut. The first game we played without using the unique player powers, then introduced them for the second game, but Jonathan won both, and game very close to a third victory. I prevented him from winning by hitting him with the Super Sheriff's power to accelerate him to the maximum speed when he wasn't prepared for it, and caused him to crash. Trish wound up winning that third play. As for me, I managed to crash into the wall twice after failing my turn rolls, and only scored two prizms across all three games. Not a very respectable day did I make of it!

Game: Downforce

I'd brought this with us hoping to get it to the table again, and after Trish revealed that she loved the game, naturally we had to pull it out and play it. She demolished the three of us after winning three cars in the auction. I only had a few sixes amongst my hand of movement cards, and probably should have bid with them, but didn't. I got stuck with the last car, the blue one, for just 2M. I did correctly bet on Trish's orange car to win the race all three times, but it wasn't nearly enough for me to make a decent showing. I game in second place at 18 million to Matthew's 16 and Jonathan's 1 (ouch!) but Trish really made the big time taking home 41 miillion in winnings! Well done!

Our group of 4 loved season 1, and played through with a 12-2 record, with lots of close, exciting games. In this season, we easily won Jan-Mar, but when [o]the number of epidemics jumped in April,[/o] we have found it night impossible to come close to winning... we basically unavoidable lose from outbreaks before we get 2 rounds in. [o]We haven't been able to get the haven in the pacific, though, because we haven't even drawn the search cards for it, much less get there and search (plus Lima turned forsaken the first game after we put it on the grid... [/o] I get the sense from these forums that somehow that might be critical to us getting some breathing room and having a chance to succeed, is that true? Should we prioritize that and hope for the best, or is it going to be just as crappy for the rest of the year?

We've finished June (3 players) keeping things under moderate control, and the key to do that after the situation you've mentioned is:
[o]thinning both decks by vaccinations[/o]
We never had a single outbreak.

Even after the situation you refer to, there is still good chance to avoid outbreaks:
[o]Epidemic cards still are shuffled to every 7-9 city card (there are also couple of unfunded events, production, and maybe other cards), so players should have enough time to handle supplying cubes[/o]

Are you doing everything right with outbreaks?
- you can still put supply cubes in the city with an infection cube
- you can remove the city infection card with blockade upgrade
[o]- you can remove the city infection card with vaccination[/o]

[o]the pacific haven is pretty essential to making life a little easier avoiding Plague because [o]it adds 15 cubes to your Stockpile meaning you can protect a LOT more cities AND it adds the ability to Inoculate cities, removing cards from the infection and player decks, which is extremely valuable in keeping the 1-card cities safe AND reducing the number of epidemics[/o] but it's also worth noting, in regard to finding it [o]that there are other cities on the Pacific coast with Sea searches...[/o][/o]

[o]It's also well worth Searching Buenos Aires, if you haven't already[/o]

[o]Also, bear in mind that the city cards for newly connected cities go in the discard, not the game end area, so the Broker upgrade allows you to pull the city cards and search them without risk of infection as long as you have a matching coloured card.[/o]

In short, there's a bunch of stuff you can do to make life easier, but [o]finding that Haven is a goal for a very good reason[/o]. And don't forget to increase your rationing level each time you lose, those rationed events make a HUGE difference. There's a reason we've tended to ping-pong between winning and losing based on having 0 or 2 rationing.

It's also important to keep your progress fairly measured, and not exceed your stockpile too much. Rushing to connect lots more cities with a small stockpile is asking for problems. Similarly, remember that it's not essential to do all of the optional goals, nor is reconning beyond the Americas required at any point yet in your game. Reconning is CRAZY hard to do without permanent supply centres in the relevant cities, and putting enough effort in to do it will almost always put you at serious risk of losing.

Finally, I can't remember offhand what Forsaken does [o]in particular if it blocks actions other than moving in and out, and none of my board photos are clear enough for me to check[/o], but don't forget that you can use game end upgrades to put population back up and take a city out of Forsaken status.

This is clearly a shameless rip off of the beloved and award winning Thrust Upon Them series, and as such, you'll be hearing from my lawyers! :P

Jokes aside, I really, really love the conceit of character journals for the session reports in the Pandemic Legacy games. It makes such narrative sense, and adds a little more storytelling weight to things.

Why try to burn them? They don't count for "Spread too thin", only city cards do. The more Produce Supply/Rationed Events/Unrationed Events/etc cards in there, the more time there is between epidemics. Also, as your supply centers grow in population that Local Production ends up being really really good.

We try to only use cards that have excess boxes for Global Production (we had an emergency once that forced us to burn one, but we're working hard to preserve our remaining 7).

We found that, in the last few months, they got in the way more than they helped. While they buffer epidemics, they also are not city cards and don't directly help you achieve your goals (the supply production is nice, but as supply dwindles, and if you've unlocked certain things, the supply rarely has enough in it to actually fuel a global, and sometimes a local, production). We didn't burn any and for our last 3 games each one we drew was a "blank" card (or fuel for Broken Link effects on Infection cards).
