Thread: Pandemic Legacy: Season 1:: Strategy:: Question on character balance (August Spoiler)

So, my group and I have unlocked the playable Virologist character, but... we all kind of agree that she looks really, really bad. Are we missing something? There are enough other ways already to deal with the Faded, and her abilities seem like they take a lot of luck to make relevant. Maybe she's worth picking if you see that your starting hand is all CODA-color cards? Even then she doesn't seem that great though, to be honest.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I tried to search for if there was anything else on this, but it's difficult to because (a) nobody puts "virologist" in their topic titles to avoid spoilers, (b) I'm trying to avoid topics with unspecified spoilers since we haven't finished the game yet, and (c) everything else I can find about the Virologist is about the search for her in July.

Can you link to it directly? I'm searching for it but can't find it.

Consider these possibilities:

A) Do you [vaguely] remember in February when military bases first appeared? They probably didn't seem all that useful then. So might be a useful character later, just remember she exists.

B) Her usefulness may depend more on how awful your board situation/state is [at this point of the game], at which case, if you need her, she'll be waiting.

After 6 more plays... 3 and 4 players. +1 replacing the +2 still seems to be balanced. The Determined player isn't winning every time but are always in the race. Will continue to play and report.

I'm not sure. Military bases seemed pretty immediately useful once building military bases became an objective, especially since the Operations Expert was introduced shortly thereafter and was really good at popping them out. But I guess I see what you mean.

(October Spoiler?)

We just finished October, though, and there's still not been anything for three months. Maybe there'll be something that happens in November or December, like taking x red cards out of the player deck and adding them then to players' starting hand or something. Just now though after October, even knowing we may want to vaccinate for Coda, the Immunologist seems waaay better at it, as does the Colonel. I guess we'll see...

Remember that you pick characters last. After you infect the board and draw your cards. Your ability might be more useful later on.

Her ability is also very helpful for preventing Faded outbreaks, particularly if you combine her with the "Flexible" upgrade.

Slight spoilers for following months.
[o]You will have other searches. All of them are in Faded cities. Being able to keep that clean will be VERY useful, particularly since the Virologist does not need to be in the area to use her power [/o]

Some quick math (case: second game January, no recon in first part. Other cases differ slightly but nothing major):

With four city cards the chance of having 3 of a colour is 27%, the chance of having 4 is 2,5 (so two players with abilities to build with four is about 5%)

With five city cards the numbers change to 48 for three en 9 for four( so 18%)

With six city cards it is 66 and 21 (42).

Those differences are enough for me to compensate for the downsides of specialization (you are relying a bit more on luck, only one player can build very good and this player may not die).

Since you can actually choose which player gets which starting hand, and we started with the labourer/architect and instructor in the same haven. We had games where we could build our first supply center in the first turn of the labourer. Pretty strong for a four player game.

The beauty of the game is that a diversify strategy can workout equally good or better, since you do not know what the legacy deck brings. So there is no best strategy because of incomplete information.

I found an upgrade sticker with the name:
[o]rebirth[/o]

Where is it from? What does it cost to apply?

Thanks,

Apply some of the self-adhesive laminating sheets and use a correctable marker (dry erase wipes off too easily and wet erase is annoying to clean up)

And if anyone has gone through the searches, are there any other bad results besides Santiago?

Scratched off everything (even all of the exposure). Oddly, Santiago was one of the few searches we never got to do. Pretty sure it was the only negative one.

Do you mind telling me when people died? (I.e. which number exposure they got the skull on?) I want to know, but don’t want to scratch my cards because we are planning on framing the board.

As I said, the traitor's tome was perfectly clear. The guide mentioned the items and what to do with them. The problem is that it didn't say which one they get. That's actually important because the shield and armor have different rules and it's unlikely for the same here to have both.

I believe it is from (Cairo recon spoilers)

[o]The Kolkata recon. [/o]

Our group just unlocked that the other night. I don't have out box, so I'm not sure how much it cost.

We are very aware of this and have exploited it. =)

Her ability is also very helpful for preventing Faded outbreaks, particularly if you combine her with the "Flexible" upgrade.

If the goal is to prevent Faded outbreaks, the Quarantine Specialist and Colonel both seem way more reliable (or even the Soldier just quarantining), since there's no gamble involved in their abilities because they don't need to get lucky drawing Coda cards.

Slight spoilers for following months.

We've already finished through October and completed all of those.
[o]If anything, those searches make it even more of a bad idea to use the Virologist. You need to keep Coda cards to search with. You can't afford to waste them removing faded when you could have other, more reliable characters like the Quarantine Specialist and Colonel keep those under control without needing to spend precious Coda cards.[/o]

I was going to get Plano boxes, but found out that Walmart has a 100 pack of reclosable bags for $1. Sorted out all the tokens and fits in the box. Have a bunch of bags left over for other games too. They're not quite big enough for the miniatures, but they have bigger ones.

I'm curious if anyone DID NOT give the laborer character the Architect upgrade and how that worked out for them?

I've been discussing with my team the possible benefits of diversifying over specializing and I am curious if anyone else went this route. A quick search of Architect shows me people almost exclusively choosing to specialize.

We finished our 2-player season last weekend, and we didn't use the Laborer for a single game.

Spoilers for about halfway through the season:
[o]We also didn't use the Architect upgrade at all until we unlocked the Sanitation Officer, who ended up taking the Architect and Outrider upgrades. It felt like playing easy mode after that.[/o]

We didn't think it was possible to get a better experience than season 1. If season 2 would be half the fun/experience that season 1 was, we would have been more than happy.

As far as we're concerned season 2 is even better than season 1 (and not justa little bit) !

Awesome, *awesome* job done by the designers ! I paid 90 euros for this....and still feel the need to thank them for letting me buy it

Hello ! I'm planning too to make the game re-usable  I was thinking about putting magnetic sheets below the printed sheet of the board and put every stickers on another magnetic sheet.
How will you do ?

i felt 2 is way better until i realized in a campaign with my son the game is forcing us to lose 4 games in a row, with no theoretical way to win. i am afraid this effectively means we might be done with the game before may has even started
