The winner doesn't get nothing. They get a permanent upgrade somewhere. And only get nothing in terms of advisors if the losing players all choose low-gold advisors.

As far as the beginning of game bonuses, this is actually quite an underpowered handicap system. Or maybe it's appropriately-powered. Our first campaign saw little catchup despite huge beginning bonuses.

I understand that that's how it makes you feel, but it's still worth it to win.

I think you misinterpret what I'm saying. It's obviously worth it to win mechanically speaking. It's how it makes you feel that is troubling.

The advisor situation is exactly what I was referencing. I was unable to keep anyone as I didn't have one cheaper than the one she chose to hold. Which for a storytelling legacy game the encourages you to name the people you hire and develop stories around them, it isn't the greatest feeling to win and then lose what you feel is a personally developed aspect of your legacy.

Does that make more sense?

Absolutely - I certainly felt like I was missing out (when everyone else was getting huge starting bonuses and I got "nothing"). And not getting an advisor at all was definitely a pain -- but I personally felt that it was a little way for the losers to get back at you and avoid sour grapes if they wanted revenge.

That being said - I was tempted to avoid winning to keep a particularly useful advisor. I eventually tried to win and failed, so I won anyway?

That's why I feel like I have a differing design philosophy than Rob Daviau. I'd rather everyone leave the table feeling good about the result, not...salty for lack of a better word. Easier to get people back to the table that way. And not start nonsense in the future.

So who is the auction house, so we know who not to do business with?

I thought he did that. As an early winner, I felt good (though I can't remember if I got an advisor) and eager to use my field improvement for a first turn ship upgrade! 2nd place in a five-player: at least you get to keep your advisor of choice.

The provinces are quarreling. Exploration has opened up beyond the former limits of daring. What a strange stone archway, I wonder what it is, or if we'll find islands near it.

Don't forget to check the Legacy deck after every game.

Some tell you to draw cards after your first game, and some tell you to wait until after you are ready to start your game for the next month.

Sometimes you get bonuses after a game whether you win or lose.

Although Matt and Rob were pretty thorough in their redactions, it's worth being aware there are some visual spoilers between 16m20 and 17m00. The audio's safe, though.

It was a good talk. I'm glad GDC did a real Board Game Design day, I think it was pretty informative and interesting. I'm not sure what the ratio of "video game developers looking for information" was vs. the number of "small devs who want to get into board games," but the whole day (except for one talk) was full of good information.

yeah, first plays are usually pretty slow compared to games with people who've played before.

Any news on the plans to design a new (bigger board)?

Actually there are some bigger boards already out there. There is the Theed Board from Episode one, this one is huge.

Than we have the Death Star corridores, that is designed in a way you can print out several and create your own corridor with desired legth (pretty cool in concept but never playtested it).

Similar concept to the DS is the board from the droid factory on geonosis. Never played this also, but at least looks interesting.

I agree on the increased value of shooters on bigger boards but isn't it highly depndend on the scenary? If you don't have line of sight all across the board the ranged weapon doesn't help too much. So the map would need some more obstacles that block line of sight. Something more like the Endor Moon map or the Jedi Temple.

1. When exploring a tomb, do you do an explore endeavor on the space *then* pick an entry in the Captain's Booke or just declare that you are exploring the tomb and go straight for the entry?
2. Can you transfer relics from your ship to a warehouse? I would assume that they are useless there, but it would free up a hold space.
3. The tablets say they don't refresh during winter. I'm guessing they are one time use per game not one time use per campaign, but wanted to be sure.

Thanks for your help with these.

You just declare the action, then go straight to the chosen entry. You'll always have to do an Endeavour, although it won't always be an Explore Endeavour. (Note that you do get a glory from succeeding at the specified Endeavour, unlike the occasional Endeavour you get from other things in the Captain's Booke - spoiler for where these are).

[o]Some Uncharted Waters cards send you to Booke entries which specify an Endeavour roll).[/o]

2. Can you transfer relics from your ship to a warehouse? I would assume that they are useless there, but it would free up a hold space

No, relics must be kept on a ship. You can throw them overboard if you want the hold space for something else in the same way as you can ditch additional goods. (In the case of relics, do the same as if the holding ship sinks - mark it as LOST and put it in the storage chest). But you can't offload them to a warehouse or your treasure room.

3. The artifacts say they don't refresh during winter. I'm guessing they are one time use per game not one time use per campaign, but wanted to be sure.

Yeah, tablets start each game refreshed, and become exhausted when used. The only way they return to being active is at the start of the next game, or if they're raided out of your treasure room by another player.

Focus on one of the two objectives right off the bat: doing the final Search if the initial draw is favorable, or vaccinating any remaining cities if it isn't. The final Search is easier than it looks, so it is entirely possible that even if you wind up focusing on vaccination, you may be able to finish the search anyway. But it is imperative that you finish at least one of the two objectives during your first game, so that if you need to play the second game at all, you have only one objective left to complete.

Backing it! The only complaint I have is with the detective meeples. The detective pieces in the original were sooooooo much cooler.

Perhaps plastic mini detective figures could be one of the stretch goals?

I was definitely annoyed by all of this: only having 1 attempt, Team Bravo coming out of nowhere to basically reset the game for you, the losing 200 points.

Two attempts, if you lose the first October game. But the game gives no indication of this, and that's definitely annoying.

I'm not so much a fan of making Patient Zero a mandatory objective, because it feels too heavy-handed: this isn't supposed to be a reading-comprehension game, but making any of the non-December searches mandatory seems a little too much like spoon-feeding. On the other hand, it's definitely the simplest solution to the issue. My own preferred fix is a bit more complex:

1) Move "Time Is Running Out" in the Legacy Deck, so that it gets drawn after your first game in November, rather than before it.
2) Add the following rule to the November Mission Briefing: "You can no longer win games unless Packages 6 and 7 have both been opened. If either of these packages has not been opened yet, place this card on top of any Mandatory Objective as a reminder".

Note that although the text of that second point is meant to sound scary (much like November's Mission Briefing), the timing of the Legacy Deck makes it much less of a threat than it seems, because Time Is Running Out will nullify it after one game. Its real purpose is to give the players one more chance to find Patient Zero, and hammer home the idea that they really, really want to get those boxes open very soon.
