Thread: Betrayal at House on the Hill: Widow's Walk:: Rules:: Monsters and Dumbwaiters

I played with the Widow's Walk expansion for the first time this weekend. The traitor ended up becoming a Werewolf (#5). Within the Traitor's Tome, it states the Werewolves (nor the dog) cannot use the elevator. In the new rule book for the Widow's Walk expansion there is only a small description of the dumbwaiter and how it's used, but it never states monsters cannot use it. Although I personally didn't think it could use utilized, we couldn't find a rule stating monsters cannot use the dumbwaiter.

Has anyone else experienced this or come up with other rulings?

I considered a house rule that if the monster cannot use the elevator it can't use the dumbwaiter.

I think your ruling sounds completely reasonable. We played a haunt the other night with human monsters with no prohibition on the elevator, and all agreed that they could use dumbwaiters.
When you unseal the last box, the leaders you destroyed will be there. (Amazingly, this is true regardless of which leaders you destroy in your own game, and the correct faction stickers will be on them, as will any funny mustaches you added.) In the storyline, they were resurrected by aliens and are bent on conquering their former provinces and killing their family and friends. If you don't actually destroy your leaders, then the final box won't include the alien leaders cards, or rules 24-29 on the page 21b insert.
For those who can't tell, the above was a load of BS ... or was it?

I can only assume that they wanted to add a tiny amount of extra tension into the decision to perform an action that would let you claim a milestone. But if there is a benefit to the game for doing that (as opposed to checking at the end of the turn) I haven't come across that yet in our campaign.

I think either interpretation can be justified, and the relevance may be determined by the card involved. For example [o]I find that I almost always use rep to pay for 1 rep / 4 gold advisors. If I had to put the +2 gold sticker on such leader, and we interpreted it as increasing only the gold cost, then the sticker would be absolutely irrelevant. On the other hand, our interpretation basically results in that player not choosing that leader, which feels like the spirit of what the event intended.[/o]
Note that either way, I don't see the impact on the game being very large, as there are (first + second box spoiler)[o]a huge deck of advisors to choose from now. At the rate this I expect that the only advisors we're likely to see in back-to-back games are the ones we carry over...[/o]

Yea. I was wondering this myself. Could you not just play it that you check for completed Milestones after both your actions. Then if you have completed more than one, choose?

What it feels like to me is that this was at some point the intention, and when it changed the rules didn't get fully adjusted.

We have a slightly different question related to that sticker:

[o]The player who got the +2 gold sticker on his advisor was also the game winner. So the winner's advisor has a cost of 3 (+2 for him). The highest advisor retained by another player was a 4 cost. So does the winner get to keep his advisor for next game?

We ruled no, because the cost for him is 5. But if there's a ruling somewhere that conflicts that or a reasoning that does I'd love to know about it.[/o]

Title changed. Relationships are on the cards so everyone knows they will come up at some point.

Thanks you everyone for the answers. While it's true that discarding two cards can make it harder to cure, that's probably worth it to prevent a potential outbreak that stays permanently on the board. Especially if the cards you discard are the CoDA colour.

Might also want to block Sessions. I haven't been/don't plan on breaking up my reports with spoiler tags (though I do usually reiterate the spoiler warning IN ALL CAPS before I go into anything).

Ouch! What would make this perfect (in terms of angst) would be if you had one upgrade on your flagship. (If so, then you would have (barely) survived and succeeded with just one more success, or if you had put on a second upgrade...) I think there's less than a 1% chance of that result happening.

Regardless, glad you're taking it well, and better luck in your next game!

We would have ruled as you did, Joseph. I don't think it's a huge deal either way (in the long run).

Hi JR, I have a question about part 2 of this entry:

[o]Regarding add Research (2) sticker to my Leader Card - does this come from from the upgrade sheet? If so, during Train Advisors at End of Game, there will be one less upgrade sticker available (for 5-player game). What should we do? Thx in advance! [/o]

The problem with the current title is that you have to have finished the game to open the thread, because you don't know what month(s) are spoiled.

Having the entire forum be "Rules Question (MONTH Spoilers)" would be terrible, although to some extent that's already what we have to do.

I don't know, maybe people just shouldn't read the rules forums if they don't want spoilers. :D But since the overall page view currently aggregates the forums, and there's no way to make sure you don't pick up a spoiler thread in there... I guess we're stuck with tagging threads this way.

Also, is the +2 gold cost for the advisor only applied if that player pays in gold, or do the have to pay the +2 gold if they buy it with reputation?

I thought the cost is only the gold cost but looking at the rulebook that's not so clear at all. It would be very reasonable to say that the reputation cost increases from "1 reputation" to "1 reputation + 2 gold". I still think that it's only the gold cost but I'm not that confident.

Players do not have to pay the gold cost if they're using reputation instead.

Almost after every single haunt, I wish there were an extra few sentences of clarification on any of them.

Always fun though.

I am also curious about the answer to Slyght's question, as well as this one...

My group is playing that [o]the +2 gold increases the cost to hire the character regardless of how you choose to hire him. I haven't seen any official comments on this; this is just how we decided to rule it.[/o]
[o]If the province owner chooses to keep their +2 gold advisor at the end of the game, how does that affect the winner's choice of advisors? E.g., since "
The player who won this game may only keep an advisor if its gold value cost is lower than that of any other advisor kept by a player.
", if the province owner keeps what would be a 2 gold advisor for others, but for them is a 4 gold advisor, would that prevent the game winner from keeping a 2 gold advisor?[/o]

My literal interpretation of this is that [o]the +2 sticker represents an additional surcharge for that specific player, and the "gold cost value" of the advisor hasn't actually changed.[/o]

The additional cost doesn't affect the gold value of the advisor, so it has no effect on end-game resolution.

It's simply an additional cost when that player wants to purchase that advisor - once the advisor is purchased, the cost can be considered non-existent (unless it makes its way back into the forum to be purchased again)

You may name your province (on the gameboard and province board) and ships (on your province board) when you are ready.

I have a question regarding the bolded part. It says "when you are ready"... but how do i know if i am ready ? Or otherwise: what is considered "to be ready" ?

Thanks in advance.

I believe I took this much more existentially than it was intended.

Hm. Right now, the basegame and expansion do fit in the base box for me. I mean it fits really well. The card stack is like one or two cards too high, but I just put the instructions on top of them, and put the lid on the box and it fits in great.

Obviously a custom insert would be better.
I suspect you could fit the entire game in just the expansion box with a proper insert.

Without going too much into spoilers, the results of achieving a milestone after your first action of a turn may affect the decisions you make on your second action.

[o]For example, if you receive an extra Fortune or Reputation token as the result of a milestone, you might want to use that token during the next action on your turn. Or you might want to use your next action to put you in a better position to use that token on the following turn.[/o]

But I think this benefit is minor, and nothing I have seen from a handful of milestones so far would be affected much if the rules said "check for milestones at the end of your turn and pick one".
