Thanks for the answers.

There's one question where I don't believe your response actually answered the question asked:

[o]When can Equipment be used (subject, of course, to the constraints on each individual item of Equipment)? Can Equipment be used in exactly those circumstances in which an Event could be, or are the rules for playing Equipment more, or less, restrictive than that?

As a specific example, is it legal for a player to play Equipment instead of discarding to bring themselves back within their hand limit?[/o]

Answer:
[o]You cannot use equipment or a power unless you can fulfill the play condition of that equipment/power. For example, you can’t use the Drone Escort unless you are driving into a collapsing or fallen city.[/o]

[o]The question is not whether you need to meet the conditions listed on the equipment in order to use it, but what other conditions there are.

For example, if you were at your hand limit and drew a Funded Event and a City Card with an Unfunded Event sticker on, you could immediately play both cards as Events without needing to discard anything else.

If, instead, you wanted to use the stickered City as the last card of an Efficient To Sequence (2nd positive mutation) Cure, you'd have to discard an additional card to meet the hand limit before discarding for the Cure (according to previous rulings)

If, instead, the sticker on the City Card was an Equipment sticker, for a piece of Equipment you could use after discarding down to your hand limit, could you use the Equipment before discarding like you could if it was an Unfunded Event?[/o]

We had a similar disappointment to OP and, like others, our difficulty with searching came down to luck of the draw, especially with city zero (hard to reach and rioting). At least one game was lost trying to achieve the search objectives. This led to more riots and more faded cities, so why should we keep doing that?

The searches should be mandatory, but maybe not initially. Perhaps in Oct they could have introduced some mandatory objective stickers to put on the searches. Failure twice in Oct would bring in team bravo and that, with the corresponding points deduction, would be due punishment for failing.

I guess it comes down to being punished for not knowing something. Sure, they emphasized that it was for the cure, but they also didn't give any timeline beyond the one implicit to the game. Great for the story, but our group felt slighted at the end because of this big point deduction. Otherwise, we absolutely loved it.

My group pulled a move last night that I'm pretty sure isn't legal, but I wanted to make sure. We had a card come up that would have caused an outbreak. Upon seeing it, we used an unfunded event to remove one of the cubes so it wouldn't outbreak. Their argument was that it says to use it at any time and that it doesn't cost an action, so the time between drawing the card and adding the cube counts as "any time." Legal/illegal?

If you look at page 15 of the rulebook, under "Event Cards", it says:

Event cards can be played at any time, except in between drawing and resolving a card.

So you are correct - the play was illegal. You need to either remove a cube before seeing what the next Infection card is, or accept the Outbreak (or chain of Outbreaks) and remove a cube afterwards.

The only thing I would say you could have done differently would have been to prioritize searching in the first game of October over completing objectives.

That's what my team did. We more or less gave up on trying to find cures for the first game in October to try to find the Soldier, and then spent the second half of October doing the same thing trying to find Patient Zero.

We rationalized this in our group by saying that the whole point of the Legacy game was the narrative, and so we chose to focus on the new feature of searching instead of trying to complete the objectives for the win.

There's no way you could have known you wouldn't be able to try again, so I wouldn't really say you made a mistake. I can see why that would be disappointing, though.

Another great write up!

Our group almost did the Civilian Self Sacrifice thing, too but we decided to check the book and confirmed it was too good to be true.

Related start-of-June spoiler:
[o]Similarly, a Grenade Belt can be used at "any time".

Presumably, that follows the same rules as playing Event cards, so I can't play it between drawing and resolving an Epidemic card, but could use it between two Epidemics drawn together, or between an Epidemic and the subsequent infect step of the current player's turn.

But that's just my assumption. It doesn't seem to be stated anywhere, so some clarification would be welcome.[/o]

(More generally, I have noted with gratitude that Matt has replied. But I've not had time to take it all in yet. (-8 )

I have been playing with my brother and sister in law and my nephew. Playing P:L has become "The thing we do when we are together" and has been a source of much joy, frustration, screaming, yelling, planning, complaining, and high fives.

We are going to start November our next game, and knowing it will end one day, we're all a teensy bit depressed.

I'm assuming that your group is all [or mostly] adults, so hopefully self control isn't an issue.

In one of my RISK: Legacy campaigns, we knew who the ultimate 'Ruler of the World' was at the end of game 14, so we decided to go ahead and open the 'Do Not Open' envelope and use it for game 15 [since we really wanted to play all 15 games no matter what].

Honestly, this is probably the best option - you should DEFINITELY open and enjoy the contents of the envelope, just not while your normal campaign is still ongoing. If you get to the point where the final outcome is decided, then why not? If you REALLY hate what the envelope changes about your game, you can always just choose to ignore it anyway.

The only time you can do something similar is in regards to an Epidemic card. Once you draw the Epidemic you have to infect the new city and shuffle the discard back to the top of the deck. You can however play effects before drawing the infection cards for the end of the round

Our game score was 820, with CodA being black and the Soldier (with the Paramilitary Escort) being the traitor.

We tended to focus on the search while trying to keep outbreaks low, which in retrospect was a good strategy. This meant we lost the first half of six months, but we recovered in the second half of the month. We sometimes had two players, sometimes four players, and other times, we had two players playing two characters each. For December, we lost the first half of the month, but we ended up vaccinating all the Faded cities except one. And we're vindictive and we had spare C4, so we trashed the military bases out of spite.

We have viewed it all as part of the single, final search action. All the resolution and fallout from finding the soldier gets done and you cannot interrupt portions of that to take other actions or do anything (like cure out of turn). Once everything is resolved, characters removed, Civilians added, objectives ripped up, etc, THEN you can complete your turn with any remaining actions.

There is one exception. The card "Resiliant Population" may be played in the middle of resolving an epidemic card, in between the Infect and Intensify steps. This exception is written right on the card, however.

For all other situations, once you draw a card and reveal it, you must resolve it completely before you take any other action.

I wonder if it is possible/desirable to play a game each month in its finished state once before moving to the next month?

So if you beat the month first try, you play it a second time, without making any modifications, and then move to the next month. Likewise, if you lose the first time in a given month, play the second game, and then win or lose, you'd play a third time in that month, again, making no modifications before moving on to the next.

This way you would pick up 11 interlude games, and maybe have more of a chance to process the changes before having to truly face the consequences.

This is a great variant...but requires a little modification. Because you aren't giving characters scars in the "non-campaign" Extra games, we play if you get a scar you immediately become a Civilian.

We've started playing 2 extra "no advancing the campaign extra games" every month. One is with the "C rated" or worst combo of characters, and then one with the "B rated" which is a not quite A list group but not as awful as C crew. It is a lot of fun to see how helpless the C crew is lol

Our current crews:
A team -- Scientist, Researcher, Ops Expert
B team -- quarantiner, medic, dispatcho
C team -- colonel, soldier, generalist

We are in June...as new characters come on board we reassess the teams. It is a great way to play and certainly getting more plays for our investment. We track the B and C crews win/loss separately to give them funded event cards for how awful they are. Our A crew is almost always unfunded (one loss to date). Bottom line -- don't advance or sticker and play as a non-campaign for wherever you are at is certainly a good option for those who want more for their money.

We got Blue because while we were going to cure it on the next turn, the Epidemic put it ahead of Red. Luckily we managed to keep it pretty well in check and managed to eradicate two of the other diseases before the end of the game for their bonuses.
