But insofar as the Drone Escort gives us any precedent at all, it shows that a card that you discard "when" you do an action does NOT require that you meet all the regular prerequisites of that action before you're allowed to use the card.

It shows nothing of the sort.

Drone Escort's text includes "You do not need to spend any additional cards." That's the part which means you do not need to spend any additional cards. If that weren't there, you would need to spend all the cards you normally need to.

Binoculars doesn't say anything like that. Playing Binoculars doesn't change what cards you have to play to Search.

Hey Everybody :)

here's the weekly report!

TUESDAY 12/01/2016

Tuesday is the night of the Home Gaming group and we continued our:

3x Pandemic Legacy: Season 1

[o]
After the two defeats in the last 3 games we were bent on changing the tide and returning to the winning streak!

So we went for our second run on August, we used the same team:
Tiago - Operations Specialist
Nuno - Quarantine Specialist
Duarte - Medic
Me - Researcher

This was probably the easiest win we had, we didn't had any outbreaks and we were able to cure and eradicate all 3 deceases!!

An easy win!

-----------------------

We marched to September and we were tasked to find a Paranoid Soldier!

This wasn't good news because in every month that we had to find someone we were able to find him/her but we always lost the month! So things were not good...

And they didn't start very well... Before we could do any of the requirements we had 3 Outbreaks (Buenos Aires, Bogota and Seul).

Then we finally found the Paranoid Soldier and many things were revealed!!!
The virus was manufactured by an evil organization: Zodiac... and one of the members of the team is a traitor and loyal to Zodiac!!

It was Dj'Aló, the Operation Specialist! When he was discovered he fled and disappeared and a civilian took his place!
This was a huge blow to the team because Dj'Aló was the one that could build Structures more efficiently, he had relationship with 2 members of the team and had 2 attributes, he was killing vitreos whenever he left a city with vitreos and he could place quarantine tokens in adjacent cities if he was in a military base!!!

we proceeded to Cure Lotopegui and Peste Petra...

then 2 more outbreaks, Calcutta and Atlanta... and the one in Atlanta is well deserved because it was in Atlanta in the Research Center of the CDC that the virus was created... so the city went into tumult and the Research center was destroyed! Well Done!!!

Then we cured Ferbe Amarela...

I don't know if I forgot to note more Outbreaks, I think we had 2 more or if we didn't have we were on the brink of destruction if 2 or 3 particular cities went into outbreaks...
We had to place the final Quarantines to get to 7 Quarantines in vitreo cities!
We went for the all or nothing and Duarte placed 2 quarantines on his turn ending the turn on a vitreos city, so he would get a scar if the game was not ended prior to his next turn...
A Quarantine token was removed during the infect phase but no outbreaks...
I was able to place 2 more Quarantine tokens on my turn...
And Tiago did the same and we ended up with 8 Cities quarantined!

A very hard fought Victory!!!
--------------------

And we went for October...

We had to change the team due to the absence of the Operations Specialist and the Soldier, Silvestre Está'Alone stepped in because he needed someone that could deal with the vitreos and since Silvestre can pick up equipment cards and we still had 2 Grenade Belts on hand to be applied on cards he entered...

And once again, we were tasked to find someone, this time we had to find the Patient Zero, in Jacarta... This proved to be a very difficult search, we didn't have any red cards at the start of the game and they were coming out to the right person... so we decided to give up on that objective for this month and hope for a better starting hand in the following month!

we started out at full steam and cured the 3 deceases before anything bad happened, then we had 3 outbreaks, London, Bombay and Calcutta...

Despite the good start, this was another difficult victory because Pest Petra was very active and there were 5 cubes to be placed on the board when we won the month!

We were able to destroy 2 Military Bases, Tokio and Madrid and we were able to Quarantine 7 vitreos cities!

another hard victory!!!

Let's see what November will bring and we have to find Patient Zero this time!!!

[/o]

So, in short, 3 months and 3 victories... we just have November and December left!!!

Progress:
JANUARY - VICTORY
FEBRUARY - VICTORY
MARCH - DEFEAT
MARCH - VICTORY 2nd try
APRIL - VICTORY
MAY - VICTORY
JUNE - VICTORY
JULY - DEFEAT
JULY - VICTORY 2nd Try
AUGUST - DEFEAT
AUGUST - VICTORY 2nd Try
SEPTEMBER - VICTORY
OCTOBER - VICTORY

THURSDAY 14/01/2016

During the afternoon I had some time so I busted out my copy of:

2x Bottom of the 9th

Playing solo and had a great time... really liked the game, the rulebook not that much, specially for the solo game, they condensed it way too much and there are several important things left out...
Thankfully the designer is very active on the forums so most of the questions are replied pretty fast and that's a very important thing :)

The quality of the components is great, my only issue with the choices is that the Batter/Runner meeples are White and there are 2 sets of dice to be used in the game, one for the Pitcher and one for the Batter, the 2 dice for the Pitcher are White and the Die for the Batter is Red... it can create some confusion, specially when playing solo and rolling both dice at the same time :p
So I just used the normal numbered dice reversed... the red die for the Pitcher and the White for the Batter!

Other than these two things, the game is great, plays very well solo, it even has a "campaign" for the Manager :)

I couldn't back this one on KS because of the crazy high shipping costs but I sure miss those extra Batter, Pitchers, etc that were unlocked in the KS version... have to see if I can get some of those because in the base box there aren't that many players, and they make the make fun do to their special powers... so, the more the merrier!!!

I ended up playing 2 games winning the "opening" mission and failing to beat the second one... that looked to be a very hard one (Comeback Kids) that has you starting the game losing 0-2, so you have 1 inning to score at least 2 runs to tie and be able to go to extra innings... that is not easy to do but on top of that you lose all the Traits in your Batters!!! (traits are a bit of special powers that make the batters different from each other)

Game 1
Home Opener + The Yips Effect
Victory on the 10th Inning

Game 2
Comeback Kids + Windgusts
Lost, couldn't score in the 9th so it was a defeat!

After the two solo games of Bottom of the 9th it was time for the night of the Boardgamers of Porto Weekly Gathering and we started by playing:

Sitting Ducks Deluxe

This is a great fun filler game... talked about a few weeks earlier when we played for the first time... it's totally chaotic but so much fun...

I ended up in 2nd AGAIN!!!!

Score:
David - Won
Me - 2nd
Cláudia - 3rd
Pedro Prof - 4th
Pedro Dragao - 5th
Duarte - 6th

Next up was the game of the night:

Haspelknecht

Another of the Essen Releases, this one I had played a demo session at Essen and liked it so much at the time (despite only having played 1 year of the 3) that I bought it...

Now I played the full game and I have to say I loved it!

(A Look to the Round Tracking board)

"A long time ago, in the Ruhr valley, a young shepherd made a campfire in a pit to warm himself. His campfire seemed to burn much longer than usual.

The next day, he discovered shiny black stones amidst the ashes, which were still glowing and burning. The boy told the farmer who employed him about this and together, when the work in the fields was done, they dug in the Pinge for these black rocks.
The deeper they dug, the more nasty pit water appeared, making the digging increasingly difficult.

At home they discussed what techniques and tools could be used to get rid of the pit water and go deeper in the ground to get those magical shiny black rocks named coal.

In “Haspelknecht”, the players take upon the role of farmers who exploit the presence of coal in their lands in the southern part of the Ruhr region.
Coal was found here close to the earth’s surface. The game is set in a time where the lands were mostly covered with forests and roads were rare.

The players will obtain knowledge, expand their farm and free coals located deeper in the ground from the pit water and bring them to the surface"

Despite having real good decisions to be made the core mechanics of the game are very simple, and I like this.

The game has 3 years, each year has 4 seasons and in the first 3 seasons (Spring, Summer and Autumn) players will select actions discs at a time from one of the boxes, when you do this you take all the discs of the same color (Black, Brown, Yellow) present on the box... after each player has done this, players will have a second turn picking from the remaining discs but only if you have taken less than 5 discs on the first picking...
The discs taken in the first pick will also determine the turn order for the rest of the season and for the start of the next season to pick the discs...
Some of the boxes from where you pick the discs, if you do it in the first pick will come with water and having water in this game is bad because it will prevent you from taking the Coal you want and need!

The color of the discs you take is important because it will determine the actions you'll be able to perform in that season, so if you take Black discs you can use it to dig for coal or to drain water from the pits to be able to dig for coal...
Brown discs will allow you to obtain Wood from the forests and you need wood to sustain the pit you are digging, otherwise they would crumble!
The Yellow discs will allow you to get food. You can also use 1 yellow disc to use the Coal-Digger worker (or pay one food or 1 money) and he will do 2 actions of digging coal (when there's still coal in the Pinge) or drain Water...

So, you start the game with 3 Workers, the Farmer and the Farmhand (mentioned in the intro) and the Coal-Digger... each of these workers can only do one action per season (the coal-digger does 2 with one payment), the Farmer and the Farmhand can do pretty much the same actions, get food, wood mine for coal/drain water but the Farmer can also acquire Developments. The Coal-Digger only digs for coal/drains water.
The action taken depends on the color of the discs you place on the Farmer and the Farmhand, only one color of discs can be placed in each of them if you want them to do that specific action, so if you place 3 brown discs you'll get 3 wood, 3 yellow discs you get 3 food, 3 black discs you can mine 3 coal, drain 3 water or any combination of the two...
You also have the option of placing discs of different colors on the Farmer to acquire Developments, depending on the requirement of the Development you want to get...
And this is where most of the meat of the game is... you can't get all the developments because you have 9 discs to place and there are 20 Developments available:

(The Developments made)

As you can see in the photo, in the top part of each tile there's a cost in action discs, 2, 3 or 4 discs, some have to be of a specific color, the Grey ones can be of any color.
If a player wants to acquire a development, the following rules have to
be followed:
• On the top row, a player can acquire any development tile.
• On non-top rows, a player can acquire a development tile if the development tile is adjacent to a development tile the player already owns.
• Alternatively, a player can acquire a development tile if the development tile is already owned by another player and not adjacent to a development the player already owns. In this case the player has to pay a resource, as indicated on the assist tile (the tiles on the right of the photo), to the last player who previously acquired this development (the current top disk).

Developments will grant you with a bonus listed in the bottom part of the tile, this are usually one time things that will be helpful, or end game scoring bonus or upgrades to your farm to be place to the right of your player board. They will also grant you immediate VP's that are listed on the assist tiles to the right depending if you are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th to get that specific Development

In the Winter Season you won't get to do any action, you will get points for the amount of Coal you have, then you'll have to pay the lease of the land to the nobility (and if you can't pay, you'll get a tile for each of the things you couldn't pay and they will give you negative points at the end of the game) and then you get to store some of the goods you have depending on the Warehouses you developed during the year (you start with one but can develop more during the game)

When you move from Summer to Autumn you'l get water in the pits... the same thing happens when you move from Winter to Spring!

If you dig all the coal in the Pinge during the first year you get 2 points, if you do it during the second year you get 1 point and during the 3rd year you get 0 points :p

(My End game Player Board)

Regardless, when you do it, you will get access to the Tunnel and the Shaft.
You'll substitute the Pinge with a new tile that has the Haspelknecht that can now do 3 actions instead of 2 the Coal-Digger did, he can divide those actions between Draining Water or getting Coal from the Shaft to the Surface.
You'll also have a new worker, the Coal-Miner that will mine the Tunnel for 3 coal, provided that there are enough wooden beams to hold up the tunnel! But this coal-Miner will only work for Food or Money, no discs can be placed here! The coal that is mined on the Tunnel goes to the shaft and stays there until the Haspelknecht pulls it up to the surface.

So players will have to balance all these decisions, what discs to get to be able to do the actions they need to do... mine, get wood, get food, drain water, get developments, what to do when... some very hard decision, shall I take those 3 black discs and hope no one takes those 2 brown ones I need for the wood or do I secure the wood and risk losing the black discs? What development should I get?

great great game!!!

We played some things wrong, we counted all the discs taken in the round to determine the turn order when it should have only been the discs taken in the first pick...
The other thing we played wrong, I don't think it would affect the final places on the board but it would affect the overall final score was that we only gave points for developments for the Tier, so in the 1st tier only 1 person got 1 point, in the second tier only the first and the second person to get developments there got 2 and 1 points, etc...
The points are scored in each individual tile and not the Tier... so the scores would have been a bit higher...

Score:
Me - 53
Tiago - 40
André - 34
Cláudia - 31

My 12x5 Challenge 2016 Edition

by Kyle Pratt

I was really hoping to complete a 10x10 challenge this year. But with a baby in the house, it is probably out of reach this year. In its place, I came up with a slightly milder challenge. It will serve the same purpose and allow me to get some games to the table that I haven't been able to play as much as I like without limiting my plays to only these games.

Below is a list of the 12 games I will attempt to play at least five times this year with my reasoning for inclusion on the list. My hope is to document the plays on this blog, so I may look back at the end of the year and see exactly how my challenge played out.

Without further ado, the games:

(In alphabetical order)

...and then we held hands

I picked this up because it has my wife's favorite board game elements: it is cooperative and abstract. I can honestly say I have never seen her so excited to try a game. I will be surprised if this isn't one of the first games we complete the challenge plays for.

Betrayal at House on the Hill

This game has its flaws, but no game on this list gets a broader group of people excited to play a game. Every time it has hit the table, we have had a good time. Excited to get at least five more plays in this year.

The Castles of Burgundy

I fell in love with this game late in 2015. It quickly hit my top ten, but I haven't had a chance to play it much. I'm hoping another 5+ plays will help me develop a better strategy.

Dominion

I've avoided Dominion because I know if I like it, I would end up buying every expansion and promo out there. My wallet can't handle that. Luckily for me, my friend Jeremy picked up a copy over Christmas and has been raving about it ever since. Shouldn't be hard to convince him to play it five times this year.

Eldritch Horror

I've played this game twice as much as the next most played game on this list. Adding it to the challenge was less about playing Eldritch more and more about the expansions. I'm looking forward to trying out Strange Remnants and getting in a few more plays with Mountains of Madness. If Under the Pyramids finds its way into my collection this year, it can also be included here.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game

One of my top three games of all time. Admittedly, it has its flaws, and there are a TON of games out there I haven't played. Still, even being totally unbalanced at four, with six players this game sings. All the strategy, tactics, diplomacy, and table talk I could hope for in a gaming experience. The only thing keeping this from being played more is its length.

Hanabi

I like Hanabi. My wife likes Hanabi. Everyone I've played with likes Hanabi. And somehow it's only been played 7 times. That needs to be corrected.

Jamaica

Another new addition to my collection. I was lacking a racing game, and I think this light, pirate themed game will be perfect. I got a couple plays in in December. I'm hoping it hits the table at least 5 times in 2016. Hoping the first (and maybe second) one will come when I host our monthly gaming night later this month.

Pandemic Legacy: Season 1

My mom surprised me with this for Christmas. Obviously, I'm planning on getting the full 12-24 plays in this year, but I would have felt silly not including it here. No game has me more excited to play it than Pandemic Legacy. Pandemic is my favorite game, and I'm sure the legacy format will take it in a whole new amazing direction.

Trickerion

One of three games on this list that I got off Kickstarter last year. Trickerion arrived too late for me to play it in 2015, but there is no way I'm going to let much time go by before I get it to the table. The one challenge is it's probably one of the heaviest games I own, so it won't get out with my main group.

Viceroy

The last of the Kickstarter games. I really enjoy Viceroy and feel there are still so many paths to victory I have yet to discover. Still, it was my wife who suggested I add it to the list. It always makes me happy to hear she is interested in playing a game.

Game #12 Not Yet Decided

I'm holding off naming the last game in my challenge as I have a birthday in the first quarter of the year and want the flexibility to add a game if I receive one then. The top games on my wishlist are Mission: Red Planet, New York 1901, Burgle Bros, and Deception: Murder in Hong Kong. Maybe it will be one of those...

So we just played our first game of pandemic legacy tonight, and have a questions concerning the rules around eradicating a disease.

The rules state a disease is "eradicated" if it is cured and all cubes of that color are removed from the game board. You then flip the cure marker over to it's other size with the slash through it to indicate this.

My question is, will this virus stay "eradicated" until the end of the game, or if you infect more cities with this same disease, do you reflip the eradicated token back over? i.e. Once a disease is eradicated in a game, do you count is as eradicated regardless of subsequent infections, or is a disease only eradicated if at the end of the game, there are no cubes of that color on the board?

I think this is more common then you might think b/c of the way they used circles for everything. They should either not used numbers on the boxes or used squares around the number or triangles or something b/c we did this exact same thing for one month before realizing we screwed up.

Not a huge deal for sure if you find it, but it is annoying to know you messed up a month.

Stating from pandemic (but also the pandemic legacy rules if I remember correctly) once a disease is eradicated (a cure is found AND there is no cube of that color on the board) whenever you draw a card asking you to put 1 or more cube of that color on the board you just ignore the card until the end of the game. So it's not possible to put more cubes of the color of and eradicated and cured disease. I haven't played the legacy version so it might be possible that some events or cards change that during the game but in vanilla pandemic, this is the rule.

Nope Moshimon, is correct. Once eradicated that color (or disease) does not show up again for that game. Next game new story.

Yes, but you're missing the point.

If it didn't have that sentence, then playing Drone Escort wouldn't save you from discarding the other cards.

But if you discarded the other cards before playing Drone Escort, then even with that sentence, Drone Escort still wouldn't stop you from discarding those cards, because it would be too late: they'd already be in the discard pile by the time Drone Escort had any effect.

That means you use the Drone Escort before discarding the other cards.

That means equipment that says "discard when you do action X" can be used before you have discarded all of the cards normally required to do action X. It's the only interpretation that makes Drone Escort useful for anything at all.

So any argument along the lines of "Binoculars can't be the only card you use in a search because you have to have a valid search before using Binoculars" is wrong.

That doesn't mean the conclusion is necessarily wrong (I think both interpretations are plausible). But that argument is invalid.

Session: Pandemic Legacy: Season 1:: **Spoilers** July – A Troubling Start

Previous Session Reports:
January
February
March
April
May
June

This month, we quickly gather for the briefing, wondering what’s in store for us this time around. We find out, that we now need to find a missing Virologist. We now have a new possible action – Search. Plus a few search tokens that we will need to use to track how close we are to finding the Virologist. Plus some stickers to add to the Epidemic cards. Each time an Epidemic is revealed, Time Ticks On, making the search a little bit more difficult each time.

Here’s the rundown, we still need to complete three objectives, now out of a possible five. Cure the 3 normal diseases is mandatory, the newest one is find the Virologist, plus build military bases in each of the 6 regions, eradicate a disease, or quarantine 7 faded cites.

Having won the last game, we only have two funded events and decide to go with One Quiet Night and Airlift. We also get a win bonus of either adding an equipment sticker or three roadblock markers. We chose the roadblocks and place them from Madrid to each of London, New York and Sao Paulo.

The Team:

Nikki (me), the Quarantine Specialist, Leanne Francisco
Rob (my husband), the Colonel, Shawn Staithmore
Elijah (friend), the Medic, we named him David Bleak
Chris (friend), the Operations Expert, Ed Montrose

As we start setting up the board, we are immediately worried. First three cards are Bogota, Buenos Aires and Johannesburg. That’s a lot of Yellow and this disease always seems to cause us problems.

Fortunately, Rob was dealt two black cards and was our starting player. He can quickly fly to Istanbul where we have another research station and get our search for the virologist off to a quick start.

After a few rounds, we also cured yellow. We were amazed it didn’t cause us problems. We’d like to eradicate it, as it’s the only disease that we haven’t yet. But it’s just not to be. It turns out our C0DA virus was actually more of a problem. We just couldn’t keep up with all the faded that kept appearing and it wasn’t long before there were three faded on far too many cities. We were trying to get the Colonel in there to deal with it, but it was too late. We ended up with a chain reaction of outbreaks. It started in Karachi, which then caused Delhi, Mumbai, Tehran, Riyadh and Moscow all to follow suit and we already had three outbreaks before that. Game over, we lose.

At the end of the game, we get to open up more dossier windows. They reveal some more scars and equipment stickers. There’s also a new character upgrade, so we go with that, and add Paramilitary Escort to the Colonel, now when he leaves a city with a Faded figure, he can remove 1 from that city. We also make the Madrid roadblocks we added at the beginning of the game permanent.

Well, there’s no time left, we are forced to continue the month of July. Hopefully, the second attempt can see us win.

The Team:

Nikki (me), the Quarantine Specialist, Leanne Francisco
Rob (my husband), the Colonel, Shawn Staithmore
Elijah (friend), the Medic, we named him David Bleak
Chris (friend), the Operations Expert, Ed Montrose

And we are up to 4 funded events. We go with One Quiet Night, Flexible Aid Package, Borrowed Time and Resilient Population.

This time the game seems to move quickly. Chris is our starting player and by his next turn, he’s finished flying around the world and building the last couple of military bases we need to complete one objective. Plus, it seemed the deck was dealing us plenty of black cards early, so it’s not long after and we’ve found the Virologist. Awesome, we get to scratch off her card. I was hoping for a new character, but instead, it sounds like there might be a possible cure. But it seems there’s an immunologist we will need as well. Further searching in later months? I guess we will learn more in future months.

Then, we cure red and because we had removed all red cubes earlier in the game, which hadn’t come back yet, we immediately eradicate it.
I now have five yellow cards, so I move to cure yellow. We’d still love to eradicate it, but we also need to focus on the last objective and getting that final Blue cure. We do actually eradicate yellow! We can’t wait until the end of the game to name it! We’ve made it through three epidemic cards so far, and we now draw the forth, we cringe, but it’s two red cards which we can ignore as it’s eradicated, and the third card is a quarantined city, phew. And, of course, the fifth epidemic card comes out at the next turn. Fortunately, we survive that one too, but time is running out. Chris has five blue cards, but all the rest of us still need to go before it’s his turn. That player deck is looking mighty small. Will we have enough for it to get back to his turn? Elijah goes, there are enough cards in the deck and we survive the infections, Rob goes, there are enough cards in the deck and we survive the infections. I go, and there are enough cards in the player deck, we draw the infection cards and we survive them all! As soon as we get to Chris’s turn, we win the game. He cures Blue with his five cards. We check the player deck, we had one card left in it. Had we not been able to cure Blue that turn, the game would have been lost.

We’ve eradicated two diseases this game, so we upgrade both, adding the forth positive mutation to the red disease and our first positive mutation to yellow. And the name, this time around we go with Affert Mortem Trimethylaminuria.

We also scratch off our win bonus and like what we see. We get a starting military base and to place another military base. That will mean we would start the game with 5 military bases, so Chris our Ops Expert would only have to build one more. And we will likely leave the region in Atlanta without a base, and just have him add it there when he starts his first turn.

Next month is August. What will the heat of summer bring us?

Continuing with the questions on dice rolling. Is the traitor allowed to roll the dice for no reason?

We had a game where the traitor deliberately rolled the dice at the beginning of each of his turns. He later informed us that those rolls had no meaning. I felt like the traitor should only roll the dice for things that he could do on his turn, so the heroes could at least attempt to figure out his mechanics. He disagreed, saying that since it didn't restrict you from rolling that way in the rules then it was completely fair game. I understand his reasoning but feel as if it defeats part of the purpose of the game and can lead to some sketchy situations. What happens if you have a monster with a speed value and need to roll for that at the beginning of your turn? Do you just decide that your second roll is the one that will count? What is stopping you from making two pointless rolls, and then using your third roll for the actual movement in order to throw off the investigators?

Am I in the right here? Or do you think this is a legitimate tactic that should be usable?

The number of[o] searches[/o] and characters is evident when you look at the side of legacy deck...

Just played a game that uses the Heroscape engine, but is not Heroscape yesterday. It's a fantasy adventure with explorers in the lost world (think dinosaurs, ancient ruins, and cavemen in an underground volcano). Seven players on a monstrous map (6ft x 10ft). All designed by the excellent artist, David O. Miller. We were giving it a playtest before he runs it at TotalCon in February.

By the way, could we see some pictures, hear more about the setting and rules, have a link to some written material? :)

In my opinion plain Pandemic was too easy even with 6 epidemics. I played first edition and also the first extension did not change much about that feeling. Once in a while it was okay but playing several games in a row was out of the question.

Pandemic Legacy on the other hand is addicting. My girlfriend and I played through the campaign in 10 days for a total of 17 games.
