As is, the winner of each game gets a permanent upgrade that exceeds the value of the catch-up mechanisms built into the campaign. So we give +3 gold at game start for every net loss. I.e., whichever player has lost more gets an extra 3 gold multiplied by the difference.

That's in addition to the 3 gold per 5 glory behind?

That might not always be a good idea. For example, I'm playing my second campaign now (not a 2p game, but I think the principle still applies). I'm in the lead (Prince) -- however, I've only won 2 of our 10 games; the second-place player has won 4, I think. (I've general been a close second even when I've lost, which is why I haven't been edged out yet.) So should I get a 6g bonus per game? Perhaps it would be better to make the glory-based mechanism stronger, instead?

Oh, and one 2p-specific change I would make: skip the Duke rank, and give the second-place player Count, instead. I wouldn't recommend the "you can only raid if you have an enmity token" rule, as it might cause some issues in the late game.

We're also playing with increasing the amount of stuff that carries over from game to game, but have just started that. For the most part, if there's only two of you, as long as you agree on what you want to do, your changes are legal. For example, if you decide you want to jump-start the games by giving each player 18 extra gold at game start, that's the same as agreeing to spend the first year doing nothing but taxing.

You can absolutely do this as a house rule. Though one thing to consider is that part of the catch-up mechanism is that the trailing player has more gold, and first dibs on structures and upgrades. Allowing these things to carry over dilutes that a bit. There are a few structures that really shouldn't be able to be retained, too -- and while it's true that the other player *could* raid to destroy them, they shouldn't be required to do so to maintain balance.

Up to you, though!

As a more general note, there are some 2p variants in the variants forum; you might want to taking a look at them for consideration.
