Wow. Just wow. Duel of Ages II has blown me away, and I've only just played through one of the tutorial missions.
Duel of Ages is like Heroscape with more epic terrain and a lot of an adventure game blended together. I'm agog at how flexible the strategies are with this game, how deep the logistics and tactics go. How the game can be about more than just slaughtering the other side (though is that a common thread amongst scenarios for this game?). The potential for replayability is enormous with the number of characters and items available.
I really like the challenge deck mechanic for resolving battles. I'm sure other people prefer the original d10 mechanic, and I'm not anathema to rollin' them bones, but I feel the challenge deck eases the need to look up tables for combat, luck, and other things.
The downside of the game is that it's difficult to reason while playing both sides, which just means that I NEED TO FIND PEOPLE TO PLAY THIS WITH ME. Oh gods, do I ever. I'm so glad there's a neat tutorial mode, I can more easily convince folks to try this game, this wonderful wonderful game.
Hmm. While I'm on this complex-games-with-tutorials kick, I think I'll pick up Legends of Andor as well. Mythic Battles' tutorial didn't really impress me until towards the end.
Now I really want to see Watch It Played do videos of any of these games.
