Same experience as you OP. Win October but failed Search (we never had enough Red Cards).
I think they could at least made the objective Mandatory or something like that.
I also don't understand they the card says Box 6 OR Box 7. To open Box7 you need stuff that is inside Box6.

That's another thing. We almost didn't open it because we had already opened box 6. Thankfully, I thought to check the FAQ here to be sure.
[o]But this kind of railroading really irks me. I actually would have preferred it if you kept going with the game, but your objectives for December change if you haven't done all the searches and you can only get a "bad" or a "worse" ending. Only if you complete the searches properly can you get the "good" ending. Being bailed out by the game is just a really bad cop out.
Heck, I would even be okay with them ending your game early. Something like, if you get to the end of November and you haven't completed all the searches, you draw a card like, "Unfortunately, you weren't fast enough. The military has made its move and silenced those who might be able to help with the cure. Your game ends here. Destroy all remaining cards in the Legacy deck. Mission failed." That way there are real consequences to not doing all the searches. Players could easily be warned that they need to do this or else by making all remaining search objectives mandatory for that month. Yeah, you'd probably get some people who would complain, but I'd like a game to just grab you by the balls for once and really punish you if you play poorly. Video games have this with roguelikes, so it's not like it's unheard of.
It just doesn't feel right. The fact the penalty isn't modified by the number of searches you've completed already is really, really dumb. I could maybe have forgiven the game if the penalty were -50 for every incomplete search, but even that might be too much. Think about it: if you can lose 40 points by losing a month twice but completing its search, or lose 50 points by winning a month but never completing its search, that's totally asinine. You have no incentive to win July-October. Things are only better if you can win and for sure complete the search before the end of the month. Otherwise, the penalty is so massive you'd actually be better off not playing the month at all. That's just stupid. [/o]
