I find that new players, particularly those folks that tend to get overwhelmed by a lot of choice, can sometimes use the factions as an aide to building their first armies. It can be easier to spot synergies when you look at a bunch of (for example) Einar cards and see the connections between the Romans and Warlords or between the various Samurai/Ashigaru, etc. All of the initial five factions (and the later added Aquila) have various synergies within their lineup. Valkril not so much, but they barely came out with any figures for that group...easier to just lump his in with Utgar when looking for bonding/synergy as a new player.

Once a player runs through the "obvious" armies (Orcs, Elves, etc) this way, they usually become more comfortable mixing things up and spotting the odd connections that make this game so fun.
