There is a backstory of sorts, with the universe these units come from. Personally, I think it's one of the things that makes the game awesome because it gives you another way you can approach the game. I've played games where the armies are all faction specific, games where the armies are all race specific, and games where it's open season. Changing the ground rules that way helps keep the game fresh, and helps get you out of the rut of always picking the same units together.
