So, we completed our second tournament. Tomorrow we will open the Slings and Arrows box and probably be exlusively busy with that for a while, so, here's the report to complete the first Round as narrated here. The elimination rounds continued with my son, having won 11 of 16 games, having to farm out three fighters to me, bringing us both up to 8.
The rosters (* indicates the borrowed fighters on my side):
SON:
Bruce Lee, Luke Cage, Annie Christmas, Bullseye, Jekyll&Hide, Little Red, Dr. Sattler, Houdini
FATHER:
Elektra, InGen, Genie, Jill Trent, Alice, Sun Wukong*, Invisible Man*, Bloody Mary*.
And with this, we were off to the races.
Here's the second round face-offs:
1)
INGEN vs. HOUDINI
2)
ALICE vs. BULLSEYE
3)
GENIE vs LUKE CAGE
4)
BLOODY MARY vs JEKYLL AND HIDE
5)
JILL TRENT vs ANNIE CHRISTMAS
6)
SUN WUKONG vs BRUCE LEE
7)
ELEKTRA vs LITTLE RED
8)
INVISIBLE MAN vs DR. SATTLER
Place your bets, as I draw the curtain of spoilerwarning over the results of this round...
[o]1) INGEN vs. HOUDINI
Another total misperception of the actual strengths and weaknesses of two parties. Turns out, traps are useless against a teleporting Houdini; and boy, did he teleport. Muldoon did kick him down to 4 life, and down to 8 cards (vs. InGen’s 15), but a double-boosted 9 point attack in your face brought Muldoon so low he could never recover. A nasty match-up.
2) ALICE vs. BULLSEYE
Well, Alice can be a bully. We first thought Heorot was a big help for Bullseye, as there is little chance to hide from him, but I went on full assault, or rather siege mode, and pinned Bullseye in a corner. He can get out of that, a few times, but hardly often enough. Solid defeat.
3) GENIE vs LUKE CAGE
Oh boy. Again, not a surprise, as such, but still annoying – Genie managed to get LC down to 5 life, but that was pretty much it. By then, the Ghost of Baskerville Manor had taken so much damage that he was simply too fragile to hold out against the relentlessness of LC for very long. Plus, Genie has basically no big hits; and using Three Wishes to turn attacks into 4 value cards when Titanium Skin etc. exist, doesn’t feel great. So, a nice F for Effort. Genie is still strong, but not a good contender against LC.
4) BLOODY MARY vs JEKYLL AND HIDE
Forever Hide? NEVER HIDE: Mwaahahahaha. Bloody Mary was not much under threat here; Jekyll and Hide are sensitive to disruption, and disrupt them she did. Solid victory. (And I return the first of the fighters that I borrowed to my kid. Well blooded.)
5) JILL TRENT vs ANNIE CHRISTMAS
Brutal, in a word. A fight of attrition. Helicarrier is an interesting map if somebody can shoot, and I did all I could to stay out of Charlie’s range (i.e., the purple zone, mostly). Daisy nevertheless got herself killed too soon, before getting her good punches in, but at least she managed to shuffle three JT cards back into the deck – and in the end, Jill Trent, literally down on 1 life, hid on the white bridge of the Helicarrier and ran AC out of cards. My son actually thought he had won with his last attack, but JT had recovered 1 life with her utility belt a round earlier. Great match! Still #teamdaisy
6) SUN WUKONG vs BRUCE LEE
Alright. Wow. I am just now catching my breath. Everything I want from this game in a single match. First the feeling of "oh no, one-inch-punch is the perfect counter to my clones", to "wait a sec, I can hurt him quite badly and he doesn’t have so many hitpoints", to overextension, absolute brinkmanship with card play and additional actions, bluffs and counterbluffs, and in the end Bruce Lee, on 1 life, spending a Boost 4 card to walk past some Clones to suckerpunch Sun Wukong from behind. Awesome match again. I would have enjoyed winning with Sun Wukong, but absolutely happy with how it went down.
7) ELEKTRA vs LITTLE RED
Unexpected and kinda disappointing: Elektra’s first defeat, and with me at the helm. Maybe I was a bit reckless, maybe? Too blasé about dying that first time? Because by dying a bit earlier than usually, in the end, Elektra did not have a card advantage, and was not able to run Little Red out of cards entirely. I also didn’t gun to kill the huntsman early, which I maybe should have? Ach. Don’t really want to dwell on it. I really hated the discards and the auto-damage from Little Red’s versatile cards, both really hurt Elektra.
8) INVISIBLE MAN vs DR. SATTLER
Okay, that was a rather clear affair – in a game dominated by tokens galore, Invisible man really had no tangible chance to win this. He was darting in and out, hitting here and there, but he was in no position to seriously threaten the scientists. Too much healing, too much damage output, and his best schemes were towards the bottom of the deck. And off he slunk.
Still standing:
Father - Alice, Bloody Mary*, Jill Trent
Son - Houdini, Luke Cage, Bruce Lee, Little Red, Dr. Sattler
The probably biggest upset was Little Red kicking Elektra out; but it had to happen eventually.
Again, he will have to let me borrow TWO, considering Bloody Mary wasn't really mine. Which from among his six fighters would YOU give to your poor old father?
[o]It turned out to be Bloody Mary again, and Little Red. Well well. [/o][/o]
Who's excited about the final rounds?
Thanks for reading along, I'll post part III once this one has passed review. :-)
