In terms of playing time, it's hard to beat 1h00 for a game of 4.On average, a game is played over 5 rounds... So at 3 activations per round and per player, even going fast, like 1 minute per player activation, that's 5*3*4= 60 minutes.
If you're looking for a 30-minute game, it's simply not the right game.
Frankly, it's hard to get much simpler and smoother than the current collision system... In a single throw, you get both the loser and the direction of movement.
(Of course, if you're unlucky in the first round, this can happen several times, especially with 4 players, but from the second round onwards, multiple slams are less common).
On the other hand, if you want to give the game a new lease of life and try to reduce playing time, without making up your own rules, there are two things you can do:
- play only with B-side boards: B-sides are more lethal than A-sides, making it easier to eliminate vehicles and thus trigger the endgame. With 3 B-sides, you usually don't even see the 4th board appear.
- Carnage at devil's run expansion reduces game time (after a period of learning the rules): even deadlier board, fire dice that can eliminate certain vehicles, or make them go faster: either the endgame is triggered more quickly, or a player reaches the finish line faster.
- All the other extensions lengthen game times, as they require more trigger tracking and application of small rules.
