We play 2v2 more often than any other setup, and the official rules have never been an issue. By the time one of the fighters on a team is eliminated, a "gang up" of 2 on 1 is not necessarily a sure-fire victory. More often than not, the team with two remaining heroes is seriously hurting, too, so they're not likely to throw caution to the wind. If they earned their numbers advantage by focusing heavily on defeating a single character, they may also have much lower health/resources than the lone hero remaining on the other team. Other factors also come into play (e.g., map placement, special powers, presence of sidekicks, etc.) that would make universal adoption of a new rule no more "balanced" than the official solution.
Really? We played just a few times 2v2 but the lonely remaining player never had any sliver of chance of winning. Maybe we are not experienced enough, I don't know, but next time we want to try the house rule of retaining the original order with the remaining player playing turns instead of the player who was eliminated.
