I've never played Unmatched. From reading the rules in the TMNT Kickstarter standard competitive play is normally 1-v-1. But can be up to 4 player free-for-all or 2-v-2.
It is my understanding that the only characters that will count as "heroes" with an action deck for standard competitive play are Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo, Shredder, and Krang.
This means that a standard competitive game will only be combinations of these heroes. You can have Leo fight Raph. You can have a free for all of all four turtles. You can have team play between two turtles vs. Shredder and Krang. Etc.
But you can not have a competitive match between all four turtles on one side vs. Shredder on the other.
Is this all correct?

Unmatched, TMNT is a bit different from other Unmatched sets. It is similar to Unmatched, Tales to Amaze in that the set includes four playable Hero fighters (along with their sidekicks), and two Villians (along with their minions). For an additional purchase in the Kickstarter, you can add Hero decks for Shredder and Krang, giving you a total of six playable hero fighters. Four Turtles and the Two bad guys. All previously released Unmatched characters can be used in this new game, and the Heroes from this new game can be used to play against all previously released Fighters. In competitive play you can use any Hero fighters. Teams of two versus two. Three or four player free-for-alls. On the larger maps, you can get away with up to 5 player free-for-all.
You want to play two or four friends as turtles (and their sidekicks) against another player playing as Shredder? That won't work. What are your options. The turtles play the co-op mode against an AI Shredder and his minions. Or, Shredder (using the additionally purchased deck) teams up with Krang and a couple more heroes (any other hero from the Unmatched series) in a two-v-two match. Unmatched heroes are balanced in a way that if you put any two up against one, the one isn't going to be able to stand a chance. The Co-op mode Shredder is going to be balanced stronger, to be able to fight any four heroes, including the four turtles.
