We came across this too this weekend while playing this haunt. It annoyed us, but we did come up with some 'house rules' for this haunt going forward (which we printed and laminated and added to the box). These are what we clarified/decided.

(1) In a 5+ player game, after the Haunt is revealed and as part of the Fiend's setup, the Fiend will randomly select 1 hero to become possessed automatically.

(2) Once a hero is possessed, their role each turn is to go grab a Tomes of Lore and take it to either the Furnace Room or the Kitchen to destroy it, whichever room is nearest. In the event that neither room has been revealed, or you have no way to access the floor the room is on, you must continue exploring the house searching for the required tile. Possessed heroes may only destroy one Tomes of Lore per turn. To destroy the Tomes of Lore, the possessed hero must end their turn in one of the required rooms. If a possessed hero becomes unpossessed, they go back to trying to reveal the Fiend's name.

(3) A hero must pick up the Tomes of Lore in one turn and attempt to reveal a letter of the Fiend's name in a separate turn INSTEAD of moving that turn. If successful at revealing a letter, then they get given a letter. If unsuccessful, the hero's turn is done.
