Found the rule in the rulebook. I had to download the PDF to bring it up.

So the bite itself is not an item. Everything else is. So cards like the madman, while it can't be dropped, traded, or stolen, you should be able to pick up after somebody dies and drops it. Bite, not so much.

I've played this game dozens of times, and I generally don't have any questions thanks to the FAQ/errata. This one, though, I just didn't have time to read through the rules to find everything in the moment. Last night was the first time Bite counting as an item would have ever mattered and made a difference in a haunt.

Ah, good to know! Yeh I didnt even know there was a section in the rulebook that explicitly excluded Bite! I had read the "MOST omens are items" from a different section!

Yeh the Companions are a little different actually (the Madman, the Girl & the Dog) as the rules for Companions actually states that when someone dies, the first person to go in that room gains custody of them... which I read as they HAVE to take them vs the items they can chose to pick up.

Yeh I didnt know there was a Haunt affected by omens, but I cant say im surprised =). I was thinking about that event card (I forgot which right now) that does more or less damage depending on how many omens you have!
