I mitigate the costs by organizing a whiskey tasting/drinking group:
get a few other people (in my case it's mostly colleagues) with similar tastes. We're usually 3-5 people, everyone brings a bottle, we sort in order of smokeyness / peatyness, and drink a glass each (2cl or so) from every bottle, starting with the mildest one on the table.
We meet every 8 weeks or so, so I buy about 2 new bottles a year, the other times I bring one of the open bottles or none at all (we never drink more than 4 different whiskys regardless of the number people)
I don't drink much between these meetings, though.
