Thread: Fireball Island: The Curse of Vul-Kar:: Variants:: Kids variant

Today I played FI with my 4 old son. We played a easier variant of the game.
We used only the action cards (three hand cards per turn) and collect only treasures and the heart of Vulkar. (No photos)
The end triggerd by the 4th fire marble. Each person count his collected treasures. (Each treasure = 1 point and Heart of vulkar = 5 points)

It was fun!

Do you play other kis variants?

Hello!

I created custom versions for the Haunt books (BHH WW) based on the official FAQ page, own experiences/play-testing and forum discussions.

These versions are based on the original Secrets of Survival and Traitor's Tome but I changed unclear formulations and added more information. This hopefully avoids discussions during the game.

I always tried not to change the Haunt itself, I just tried to make specific parts clear. Of course that’s not always
possible. So there might be changes that do not have the original intention of the Haunt authors

You can check out my update log for all the things I have changed.

I will update both books in the future. That means, if you have any suggestions, just comment below or post a Thread in the Rules section of this forum.

My group has too many legacy/campaign games piling up so I thought I'd play through this one purely solo. I'm really enjoying it, despite the obvious downsides. When I started I assumed the haunts would involve a ton of hidden information, but that hasn't been the case for a fair number of them. In other words, most of the haunts (from what I've seen up to chapter 10) don't fall apart if you have all of the details.

Minor spoiler about the nature of a few haunts:
[o]There are even haunts that are 100% co-op.[/o]

I wouldn't recommend buying this just to play solo -- just wanted to point out that if you're a keen solo gamer, it can be done (more or less). I'm having a pretty good time with it.

Unfortunately you're about to hit a couple of chapter where solo play falls apart because of
[o]Hidden Traitors[/o]

Which is the same reason why you can't really play the game 2 player.

We went for great sailors and tried to keep them tied to the area. Then we made an exception right away :).
So far:

Mediterrean: Ulysses
South Atlantic: Columbus
North Atlantic Marconi (We decided it was the only one that retained radio capabilities, then made the Radio Operator the only character from there).
[o]Pacific: Drake[/o]

Oh wow this is so well written! And in combination with the great filmic epic plot pandemic legacy has here with the empty haven that just looks like our own and the revelation of the leaders who went to utopia while leaving us out makes this read a really immersive experience. Almost cried, haha, (the music from interstellar helped with this as well). If you like these immersion, i recommend the pandemic legacy season 2 playlist from spotify for during your play (or your writing of these amazing stories!).

Most likely not. The same thing happened in our group. I think there are still 2 tiles that have secret passages printed onto them, if not 3, which is already more than the base Betrayal anyway.

I also can’t wait to get and play this game. Got everything except the garden gnome, not because it was expensive, but because my dogs would bark at it every day haha.

I’m a huge fan of Eric and CMON, while Eldritch Horror is one of my favorite games. Also played Mansions of Madness (both editions) and now I’m playing the third edition of Arkham Horror (only Cthulhu left to beat).

Was tempted to get Deep Madness, but I found the gameplay not so interesting for my tastes. It felt to me into “yet another generic miniatures game” category. Like “Ok we have the miniatures. Now put some mechanics and let’s sell this”.

On the other hand, I also can’t wait to get Nemesis (all-in). Now that’s a game where gameplay seems to be important as much as theme and everything else. Not just adding an oxygen meter (Deep Madness) and declaring it is such an unique game.

As someone who owns DM and has played it quite a bit, it's more than just nice minis and mechanics added on. Not saying your opinion doesn't matter, just giving you another opinion. DM is exactly what I wanted. A deeper, sci-fi lovecraftian version of Zombicide. Oh and it's more challenging than anything FFG have put out (I also own and love EH and MoM). Again, opinions are a dime a dozen on the internet, but for what it's worth... this internet user thoroughly enjoys DM.

Hello everybody. I've heard from several of you about my images not wanting to work. I guess imgur made some changes. Worse, they wiped out most of my old photos. It's terrible, as I've lost pictures I no longer have. And I now have to go back and fix all the missing pictures. This will obviously be a slow and tedious process. I'm going through bgg now, but I am using a method so you don't have to worry about it trying to link you to the picture. I'm not 100% that you all can view the pictures like this, so please let me know if you do not see any here.

Anyways, it was midweek gaming at David's. Then a meetup saturday. I also manage to get my dad to play a game.

________________________________________________________________________

My dad loves true crime shows

Chronicles of Crime
We played the stuff I had already played with John and Brett. So I mostly stayed out of it and just played narrator.

:star::star::star::star::nostar:
I enjoyed watching them go through the case. Missing obvious things they should do, but also seeing the obvious things we missed.

:) Good tutorial
:) Super easy ruleset
:) Fun, and does make you think like a detective
:) The VR crime scenes are cool

:soblue: App could have been better
:soblue: No more than a 3 player game
:soblue: Voice over would have been great

________________________________________________________________________

Thursday was gaming at David's. His girlfriend is new to gaming (though had played dominion before meeting David). So keeping it mostly light. She picked up games well.

Mord im Arosa
For only the 2nd time, both murders were only on 1 floor. Made it easier for players score to change majorly on a turn.

:star::star::star::star::nostar:
A quirky filler that's plenty of fun. Certainly nothing else out there like it.

:) Very unique
:) Creates the laughs
:) Can be enjoyed by gamers and non gamers at the same time
:) Plays different player counts well

:soblue: Not as good when there is alot of noise
:soblue: Odd box choice
:soblue: Hard to get murders to start new the bottom of the hotel

________________________________________________________________________

The only planned game of the night

The Grimm Forest
Kristen stole all our cards early. She set herself up real nice. But it was John who would sneak in the win.

:star::star::star::star::halfstar:
I think it went over well with the new players. I say, bring on the expansion!

:) Amazing production
:) Some of the best minis I've ever seen
:) Fun and exciting action selection
:) Other Fairy Tales show up too

:!block: Super mean

:soblue: Missing multiple times with Fable cards can be very frustrating

________________________________________________________________________

I finally did it. Years of talking about it on the blog, and I finally did it. I fixed my copy of

Loony Quest
I'm really good at this game for some reason. I cruised to victory here, even though I was rusty.

:star::star::star::star::star:
Finally, new markers for my import copy of Loony Quest. I had to take tire degreaser to get my old clear sheets, clear again. Anyways, a blast even though it was level 1. This one will be in my tote often.

:) Awesome theme
:) Anyone can play it
:) Creates the laughs
:) Gameplay is engaging and addicting
:) You don't have to like drawing games to love it
:) Fun power ups and bombs

:soblue: Promo isn't good (we changed it to bonus level)
:soblue: Markers/erasers in the import version are not great

________________________________________________________________________

It was time for meetup. Had a little time to burn before David would get there

[BGCOLOR=#FF0000]~NEW TO ME~[/BGCOLOR]

Wonderland
First round we both learned not to bury the high cards. Second round I dominated, and won the tie break.

:star::star::star::halfstar::nostar:
I wasn't expecting much, especially after the rules rundown and how simple it all seemed. It is simple, but it offers more to think about than it seems. I enjoyed it, and will likely pick it up at some point.

:) Simple ruleset
:) Surprisingly a lot to think about with 7 cards

:soblue: Theme is mostly pasted on
:soblue: No text on the 4 special cards is annoying

________________________________________________________________________

Some how Isiah hadn't played

The X-Files: Circle of Truth
First game we both only scored 13, the lowest I've ever seen. Isiah won the tie break. Second game, I played my best game of this and scored 37. the highest I've ever seen.

:star::star::star::star::halfstar:
Considering how many times I've played this, pretty crazy in 2 games I set a new low and a new high score. Love this game. Still wanting to try 4p.

:) Good amount of choices in 5-10 minutes
:) While abstract, X-Files theme is in there
:) Small package holds sleeved cards
:) For 18 cards, generates tons of different games due to scoring

:soblue: Player powers can vary in usefulness based on score cards
:soblue: No score tokens and no way to include them. App counter recommended.

Only took FFG a decade...

[BGCOLOR=#FF0000]~NEW TO ME~[/BGCOLOR]

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition)
Sadly we had to scoop early due to Jonathon needing to leave. I feel he was in good position to win.

:star::star::star::star::nostar:
Finally Targaryen joins the mix. Their addition and the Eirie are really strong. The much praised vassel system is a big improvement over the original game for lower player counts. It doesn't make it a game worth player at lower counts though. Simply lacks the tension. And makes it way too easy to get things you want/need. And 1/2 the map is empty. I did like the Bravos Bank, I think it will be even better with more players.

So it was nice to get the rust off. This is a good expansion thanks to finally adding needed factions. But this expansion is no BSG daybreak, higher counts are still strongly preferred.

:) Backstabby just like it should be
:) Epic feel
:) Great action system
:) I enjoy the combat deck added in 2nd edition
:) Unique playing houses
:) Targaryen is fun addition as is Bravos Bank
:) A Feast for Crows expansion is fantastic with it's hidden goals and 2 hour play time

:soblue: The theme is there, but it isn't strong
:soblue: Too mathy/deterministic
:soblue: Can have big chunks of downtime at higher counts
:soblue: Lots of things going on, not newb friendly
:soblue: Needs higher player counts, even with new expansion
:soblue: Subpar player aids

I was happy Dodd was up for trying

Show Business
Wow did I do bad. I just came off playing poor in GoT, and in continued here. I did so so bad. In the end, I just wanted to get a song out as a personal victory. I torpedo'd my score just to get it out there, Isiah joined me in the madness and we both continued to sink our VP for money to bid for turn order. We were both dumb, Dodd was not amused.

:star::star::star::star::nostar:
Certainly a better play overall than last time. I just so so bad at it. Like I will be reading strategy guides to help me bad. Dodd liked it. Which hopefully means I can get it to the table from time to time. We did morph the Femme Fatal into both her evil and nice version. Everyone agreed it was better than way. She got used way more on other players, but the effects isn't as punishing.

:) Finally a game with a music theme that is deep and thinky
:) Theme completely comes through too
:) Multi use card system
:) Money is both easy to get and tight, somehow
:) Every action you do is important

:!block: Big strategy learning curve
:!block: The fact players can manipulate the event rondel is pure evil
:!block: Take that cards won't be for everyone. But they are easily countered, and have official non take that variants here on the geek

:soblue: Last player advantage
:soblue: Scoring that can happen in the middle of a round
:soblue: "Black" as one of the types of music
:soblue: The fact your whole band could break up seems overly punishing
:soblue: Bad rulebook, dice, and odd card size. Rulebook fixed on bgg, along with a fantastic player aid. Stickers for the dice are also available.

________________________________________________________________________

Off to the GC. David only had time for an hour ish game. So we let him pick

Papà Paolo
While I was a bit stagnant out the game. I played a perfect last turn which felt great after the day I had been having. But it still wasn't enough.

:star::star::star::star::nostar:
Well I'm still enjoying the game. Sadly both plays we missed you have to build only a 4x5 grid until it was too late to impose the rule. Hopefully next time, as this one is still sticking around in my collection for now.

:) Captures the theme well
:) Interesting drafting
:) You create your own puzzle
:) Wooden components look nice...

:soblue: But are a massive pain in the ass to sticker
:soblue: Can't imagine playing 1st edition without highlighted houses
:soblue::soblue: Severe lack of variety play to play

________________________________________________________________________

Jordan makes it again! So happy he's been coming out. It's like it's 2014 up in here

Rising Sun
Well George made me pretty unhappy out the gate. But I can't blame being pissy on my play. I just played bad.

:star::star::star::halfstar::nostar:
This is a game I should love, but I don't. And I finally figured it out why (besides the poor wording of cards that Lang should know to do better). It's the combat. And no, not the actual bidding mechanics and actions, I love those. It's all about the money. More often than not, it's not interesting bidding because players are so poor or rich. This game would be so much better if everyone got a fixed amount they got to keep. Imagine if everyone had like 10 coins and didn't have to lose them, combat bidding would be SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING. Instead, it's just ok. And a $300 ok game has no spot on my shelf.

:):) Beautiful board and components (especially the KS exclusive action tiles)
:) Clean action system with good player aids
:) Easy to understand the different units
:) Lots of different drafting choices
:) You have to move around and conquer different areas
:) Honor is super important, and there are reasons to be honorable and dishonorable
:) Fun combat system...

:soblue: That is destroyed when players are poor or rich
:soblue: Duplicate season cards
:soblue: Unclear abilities/text
:soblue: Massive tear down time
:soblue: Negotiation and alliances is meh
:soblue: Unequal turns, odd man out during alliances
:soblue: Lots of downtime during combat
:soblue: Gods expansion adds nothing but fiddly
:soblue: We didn't like Blood & Moon factions at all

FINAL THOUGHTS

Well I am bummed about losing so many pictures. I manually make and link all the cover photos in my blog, as linking them through BGG proved to be either too small or too big. It's time consuming, but I had a nice system that was working. But now I gotta go back and fix all my blogs. I have figured out a new system, that will be much faster in the end. But bringing it up to date will take a massive amount of time.

I'm still awaiting Elo Darkness. It's been sitting at QM Logistics for 1/2 a month now just waiting to be shipped out. You'd think small shipments that arrived before massive ones would go out first. NOPE. I'm considering a few new games to buy. Might get Neon Knights: 2086 or Underwater Cities. Strato Baseball new season has started. I've seen some of the cards, it's always exciting. I'm considering a massive rebuild. I have a massive ton of contracts that have ended if I don't resign. But it's hard to let go of players like Evan Longoria I've been using their entire careers.

May be a few weeks before my next blog. It's been a frustrating weekend all around, and with no meetup next weekend may be no gaming. Though if I get Elo Darkness in, I will certainly want to get it to the table.

Got a few episodes in of each. Got a feeling I will knock out a huge amount of Firefly in one day, eventually.

I am in near total agreement with your bottom line ranking, except I would put Clones even below Vanilla! LotR Risk is actually a very decent and fun 4 player game of strategy and of course, dripping with appropriate theme. Unless we played all wrong, my one experience with Clones was far from satisfactory even though perhaps in keeping with the arc of the theme. With only one card in the Republic's deck to slow down the inevitable march of Count Doku (Darth Sidious), all the Separatists have to do is survive for 6 full rounds of player turns to a virtually assured victory. Somewhat fun for the first time just to see how it works and likely none of the players (even the winners) will ever want to play again when they see how it ends.

Question about a rule introduced in Chapter 1:
[o]If characters survive to play in the next game, do they keep the same Calling? The rules seem to indicate that character names are entirely thematic, and that characters who turn up in the following game get a new random calling. But it would also make vastly more sense to keep the same calling for the same character.[/o]

Well the farmhand could also be the cult leader so it's the luck of the draw I guess :) although narrative-wise it would be weird for the cook to still talk to the heroes after they tried to murder her... "Oh you tried to murder me. It's all good, let me go ahead and show you around the mansion"...

I try to not include the most spoilerly bits but even what i have below is quite spoilery, so read on at your own peril.
[o]
the final haunt is MUCH easier for the heros IMHO if the heros won more than they lost... your mileage may vary...

your strategy would be much more different from ours since our strategy hinges entirely on the key difference in what the checkboxes changes..

(sorry i cheated and read through the entries of the events i missed eventhough we were told explicitly not to.. )

additional note: it's impossible to check all 13 boxes... one of the box is uncheckable.

Well we had this haunt, and it was one sided for the "heros", primarily because of an ongoing event (Glow - Bright Lights)..

[o]From what i understand from the traitor's tome,
a) he could not kill us... only bring our stat he attacked with to critical, and so the only risk of us running around with critical sanity was us triggering events that cause mental/sanity damage...
b) he couldn't beat us down/challenge us/confiscate our weapons (pitchfork :) ) because we managed to trade our sanity for might, plus we managed to savagely beat him and his orderlies down, with us talking to angels and coming up with crazy ideas.. (bet they regretted medicating us so close to the bright lights)..
[/o]
in the end it was quite one sided, and once we revealed all 6 possible event tiles for the angels the traitor had no chance to win. (though we had to wait a while to heal our sanity so that we talk to the angels)

(side note: i reckon instead of the bright lights, the heroes could also camp near the graveyard to prevent the traitor from ever getting the hero's sanity to their starting values..

maybe it's just the luck of the draw, We theory-crafted that the traitor could have a more even chance if another action the traitor could take was to OPERATE: at the operating theater / laboratory to lobotomize a hero with critical sanity and permanently take them out of the scenario.. it would have fit thematically, and the timeline also somewhat fits.. (lobotomy was a "common" practice in the 1930-40s, but it started sometime in the 1910s.. ) Having 4 heroes running around completing objectives all the time even when most of them already "sane" was what our traitor found most difficult to deal with (especially after we managed to kill an orderly) Plus it would have matched what the heros thought the traitors wanted to do to them.. :)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobotomy

Did anyone else also encountered had this as an easy haunt for the heros.. just wondering if our experience was unique...
