All attacks are calculated the same way.Active player uses an ATTACK action.
If they use no card/power, then it is an unarmed Might attack and both players have to be on the same tile. The lower roll takes physical damage equal to the difference in rolls.
If a player uses a card/power, then some things might change. You might use a different trait, like Sanity. Everything is the same with a trait shift other than mental traits cause mental damage.
Other cards/powers will allow that combatant to add to the result.
Others provide rerolls, in which case the attacker rolls first, uses any rerolls, locks in the result, and then the defender does the same thing.
Finally, some cards/powers allow an attack at range, which allows the attack action from an adjacent tile or a tile in line of sight. In this case, the attacker takes no damage if they roll lower, provided they are on a different tile. If you ATTACK with a flintlock pistol on the same tile as the defender, you will take damage.
Finally, some powers will adjust the rules in small ways. Let me know if you have questions about any of these specific powers.
