I agree with Jason, Crispy ... dive right in. That'll be your best plan of action.
I guess I misread your question and thought you were pretty much set on this game and wanted to get a taste of what it was before cracking open the Legacy version.
From what I understand, you and your group are pretty hard-core gamers. Betrayal Legacy is more light-hearted where a group enjoys the experience rather than the competitive strategic or tactical challenge. I am a pretty hard-core gamer and I like BL because I can play it with my wife and sons and it is fun, without being too deep and competitive.
And, as has been said ... the Legacy version tidies up some of the problems that came with the original Betrayal and Widow's Walk, plus provides lots of replayability when the legacy campaign is over.
