To solve the run away car where everybody bets on the same 1st place car...how about you pick 3 cars to put bets on.So everybody would naturally check the first place car as one of their bets. But then picking two other cars to bet on as well make it a bit tougher since the 2 - 6 places can swap quite a bit during the race.
You then win $$$ on your bet if it places in the top 3 as indicated on the score sheet, with the best having it so you guess 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
