As is, the winner of each game gets a permanent upgrade that exceeds the value of the catch-up mechanisms built into the campaign. So we give +3 gold at game start for every net loss. I.e., whichever player has lost more gets an extra 3 gold multiplied by the difference.

That's in addition to the 3 gold per 5 glory behind?
Yes.

That might not always be a good idea. For example, I'm playing my second campaign now (not a 2p game, but I think the principle still applies). I'm in the lead (Prince) -- however, I've only won 2 of our 10 games; the second-place player has won 4, I think. (I've general been a close second even when I've lost, which is why I haven't been edged out yet.) So should I get a 6g bonus per game? Perhaps it would be better to make the glory-based mechanism stronger, instead?

Yes, I would give you the bonus for your net losses even if you're currently in the lead.

Let's say you win by 5 each time you win and you lose by 1 each time you lose. So after the 6 games, you're ahead by 6 glory and have lost twice. Let's also assume that the winner always gets a field upgrade, so we can compare apples to apples. Then, after the 6 games, his base income is 4 more than yours, plus he gets 3 extra gold for being 5+ glory behind you, so 7. Then I would give you 6 gold for having lost twice more. So you start with 1 less gold than he does. In the same situation, the rules-as-written would have him start with 7 more.

I'm not sure how this would work out for you, but if he's the better player (as suggested by his greater number of wins), he should win the next game with his advantage under either system and cut the glory difference; if you're the better player (as suggested by your greater glory), I would expect you to win with only a 1 gold deficit, increasing his glory bonus and decreasing your loss bonus, and giving him a bigger edge for the next game. If you're very close in skill level, I suspect these small gold differentials won't matter much, and you'll be fine under either system.

If you're more interested in a close finish at the end of the campaign instead of having the outcome of each game be in doubt, glory-only is probably the way to go, but I don't think even 1 gold per glory is sufficient to address a skill difference.
