I'm happy that your answer is "It *might* work" and not "It won't work" :)
PL1 worked fine with five players. It gets harder because the cards are distributed over more players, and we have fewer turns each.
But - spoiler of game mechanics from PL1

If it possible to make PL3 1-5 players - your star in my gaming group will reach unbelievable heights. We would even be part of the playtest, if that's what it takes :)
