It's a great game, if you like the type of game it is and don't mind researching the rules.

Vague enough for you? :p

If you don't mind a little research, most of the inadequacies of the rules become less of an issue. Check out the Captain Log Unofficial FAQ (and the forums in general) for help with that. Be careful of the general forums or anything past the initial Captain's Log post, though -- spoilers abound.

The game length, complexity, and style are all matters of personal preference. If you strongly prefer short, light-to-medium weight Euros, look elsewhere.

In my opinion, one of the biggest stumbling blocks for many gamers is that it looks like a Euro, but ISN'T. There is a significant element of luck, and direct player conflict. I think the theme appeals to Euro gamers, who are then turned off by these elements.

Some of these sound like issues for your group, so it may be that this game is not for you. But if you're still interested ... I suggest that you *buy the game as a group*. Split the price -- that way, even if everyone hates it, nobody gets stuck with the bill. It's also likely to increase your group's willingness to give the game a solid try, rather than rage quitting before interesting new things are introduced into the game.
