I just taught my six years old daughter two games today: Sleeping Queens and Kings in the Corner. She enjoyed both.Sleeping Queens is light, teaches simple addition and has a rudimentary "gotcha" element. It has just enough to it to keep adults interested.
King's Corner, as my family calls it, is simply solitaire for up to four players. I didn't know there was a boxed version of this game until about a year ago. We always played with a single deck of playing cards. It was the last game I ever got to play with my mom...I think she let me win.
The other game we always played was muggins dominoes (also called All Fives) with the classic black, six-pip, dragon dominoes. It taught me how to count by fives, which has been very handy over the course of my life!
