From someone who doesnt like pure luck games.Is HeroScape pure luck? Not even remotely.
It does play a factor though.
What really matters is your team and how you use them. You have to think strategically and tactically and make good use of your units or you are going to get hammered by a more savvy player.
Look for good synergies. The larger HeroScape game plays off alot of interesting unit combos that boost eachother directly. Some play off units that compliment eachother by application.
Example. Ive got Braxis who is a real squad killer given a chance. But, she has low defense. So I screen her with some units that either synergy with her, or are good at holding the line or keeping opponents occupied long enough for her to nail them. She can even bring down big commander types. Buddy her up with a healer and things get even meaner.
Use of the terrain layout, command and control of glyphs, etc.
If you just charge in and sling dice without thought then you are likely going to get beat. Moreso if you arent using unit abilities to effect.
