Bricking does two things: compact storage (important), and let's you know right away if have everything you brought with you when you're done and packing up (even more important). Losing tiles is easier than you think, and it's getting more difficult and expensive to replace them. Have you tried replacing one of the Rock Outcrop pieces from the Underdark set lately? You can't.
The rare times I take terrain (not just figures) out of the house, I write down what I take. I very rarely take maps anywhere though, and if I do they are the smaller "tournament" type maps for short games, not any sort of big epic construction.
