We certainly may be playing the opening bid wrong. I haven't personally read the rules. I'll have to ask the owner of the game. Our map does tend to create the same opening setup.
North America has minor cities in Alberta, Alaska and the Eastern US. So it's hard to consolidate (especially with how short our games have been). Someone still usually starts there.
South America is usually mine. I founded a major city in Peru...it has a Merc scar on it and there is an Ammo scar in Argentina, a fortification scar in Brazil and one of those biohazard scars in Venezuela. If we are reading the rules right no one can start there except for me. At least I didn't get to name the continent (having only won once), and I feel like I have to go first to keep a quick African player out of Brazil and/or make it to Central America because Venezuela eats that army every turn making it hard to defend. Are scars allowed to be this close together? They kind of formed that way after my major city went up....the biohazard to mess with me....the ammo placed by me to block off a starting spot.
Africa has three minor cities...someone always starts there.
Major city in the UK...minor one next to Russa...fortification scar in Iceland. The winning streak player started the last few games there. For obvious reason I can't directly go after him without making an enemy of the North American or African player.
Last player always starts in Australia...it's blank...no cities or scars.
Asia has one major city...a few minor ones...Biohazard scar in India and Ammo scar in the Middle East.
