Yes, it seems like all your problems with the game come from a combination of really bad play and a lack of tenacity.
I am dominating my board right now, mainly for two reasons. 1) I started playing with a long term strategy from game one, everyone else did not. 2) My opponents cannot stay focused on beating me down at the start of the game.
The last time we played I started out sandwiched between two players. One came at me with everything he had. The dice were against me and I burned 6 of 7 missiles just to keep from being overrun. The other player could have come in and finished me, instead he got some silly idea in his head to try to collect high value resource cards instead and headed off in the opposite direction. End result, instead of being knocked out of the game and having to rejoin the war with less troops in an unfavorable area, I won the game by eliminating everyone else.
Even with a huge missile advantage, the only way I win is by the grace of the other players not being aggressive enough.
