Nicely expressed. With so many strategy games available nowadays, I think folks sometimes forget that this old chestnut has given many hours of enjoyable competitionk to many people for a long time.

I do regret seeing the general downgrade of components and graphics, beginning with the awful oceans in this version. to me it's hard to envision myself "conquering the world" with red-and-maroon-striped seas.

The army pieces were a huge disappointment--I've seen these arrows used to good effect in photographs of other games in progress to depict the movement paths of pieces (nod to Pete Belli here). I've read that it was Larry Harris who urged the publisher to use figures in "Risk" and while I could approve an upgrade with little tanks for ones, fighters for threes and bombers for fives, maybe, the arrows were not inspiring or inspired.

Thin cardstock is also sad to see. I guess I should hold onto my extra card decks from duplicate copies (bought for the plastic figures some years back).

I would love to see a new edition with a two-sided board, "traditional" and "new areas" (or at least new pathways) for a fresh experience. The new "HALO Risk" version with the long two-sided boards show what can be done with a more flexible playing area.

Maybe next time. Wouldn't mind seeing ships and naval lines-of-movement/transport of armies, either.
