Maybe you are thinking about this wrong. Maybe we need to stop trying to insert Magic the gathering into heroscape, and instead try to insert heroscape into magic the gathering. I i have tried to do this and here are the results:
First you create a semi-circular arena type thing with 5 branches coming off it. Each branch will represent a color from magic the gathering. While in that branch you get a land of that color at the beginning of your upkeep. if in the middle of the circular arena, you get 2 lands of the color of your choice. This will (hopefully) bring the fighting to the middle of the arena and make the game shorter. Cards have range. the range of a card is equal to its casting cost, or if its already in play, its converted mana cost. This means that cards like blaze and fireball are overpowered. to prevent spamming of such cards, you may only have one copy of each card in your deck, like in the commander format. To attack with your creatures you must be adjacent to the defender.

Please note that this was very poorly explained and i have not typed all the rules because im lazy :)
I have played with these rules though and its actually quite fun!
