Hasbro/Avalon just decided to cut corners. This is standard. Look at each successive iteration of Heroscape master sets. Each was smaller than the previous.
They didnt cut much really. Just not printing on one side of the tokens, smaller box requiring a multifold board, and the thin cardstock moon. (Think its missing the insert too isnt it?)
Otherwise same components and the units are the exact same.
