What exactly is it you do with the terrain? Do you have the map built before players choose armies or after?
I always build the map before players pick armies. Usually a day in advance (at least) since I like to take my time with the build.
I have played on all of the official maps and with all of the official objectives but rapidly moved on. The only ones I (rarely) come back to are "Table of the Giants" and the map from the Forgotten Forest set. And even then, I heavily modify/expand. I often like to build maps that are mirror-image, so each of the two players is starting from the same area. I also like to build maps bigger than they need to be, so that players are never cramped by the map edges even if fighting never really happens there....if a player chooses to run out into the wilderness, they can do so, and I like that freedom even when 99% of the action happens in a line between the two starting zones.
