(Note: Not going to spoiler tag things up to May as that is where this thread is talking about)

May is probably the hardest month of the entire campaign. The added rules from April and especially the new one in May are basically designed to make things quickly cascade out of control - but the next few months give you some powerful tools to fight back.

Keep going.

As I recall, when there was a poll about when people's first loss happens, the winner, by far, was January, but there was a spike in April (and again in September at the 2/3 mark).

The game is designed with a deliberate difficulty curve, with peaks around 1/3 and 2/3 - April/May and September/October - so it's expected that people will lose those months unless they've got the balancing bonuses from losing earlier games.

It doesn't surprise me at all that January has the most first losses. It's also the first game, and PL1 isn't easy for a lot of people. And yeah, April is another spike in difficulty, although I don't think it peaks until May. But still, the difficulty jump in April is definitely enough to catch out a number of groups and give them their first loss, at 0 Events and now dealing with a new threat that arose mid-game.

(September/October major spoilers) [o]I don't recall anything particular around September or October that spikes the difficulty up? Actually I guess it's probably from opening box 6 mid game and having one of your best characters go traitor, losing their hand of cards and all their abilities. Yeah... that would probably do it actually.[/o]
