Downtime isn't the issue for me; it's that the game state changes so much between your turns that when it comes around to your turn, any plan you had will almost certainly no longer work.

In addition, it can be hard enough in four players to activate the insanity powers in order to be "levelled up" enough to deal with the endgame. With five players, I'm almost constantly re-rolling core dice to try and get MORE tentacles, just to have a change of completing.

Which makes for a strange experience that just doesn't shine like the 2-4 player game at all.
