I think common squads are good just because they allow abilities like the drones' and zombies'. With a good d20 roll, the drones can move and attack with 9 figures in a single turn. The zombies can move 6 figures in a single turn, and attack with any 3, including ones that weren't moved that turn. These kinds of abilities wouldn't be possible if common squads didn't exist. Also, common squads are great because when you have multiple squads, and some die, you still get the full worth of that turn when you reveal the order market on them. With unique squads, as soon as one of them dies, you have one less figure/attack to use on your next turn with them.
