I disagree, I'm not not convinced that re-purposing the Death May Die engine for other games will work.
DMD combat system is really, really basic, and with not enough granularity for enemy variety (all of DMD monsters are very similar).
Most of DMD engine (combat, skill progression, game effects, items) is based on sanity loss. If you remove sanity loss there are really no interesting elements remaining.
And sanity loss is difficult to justify in other settings (Marvel heroes increasing power and leveling up until they explode?).

In fact this is not a critic, the opposite, Death May Die is so thematic that the entire game engine is built on its setting: disrupting the ritual, Mythos cards, characters trying to survive insane-inducing events. The setting is built in its engine.
